WORCESTER -- On a sunny but chilly Saturday morning, the nationally ranked WPI women's rowing varsity eight kicked off its spring portion of the schedule by recapturing the Jennifer McLaughlin Cup and besting four other ranked programs in racing on Lake Quinsigamond.
The No. 6 Engineers began the morning looking to regain the Cup for just the second time in 12 years and was successful by defeating No. 7 Wesleyan by over five seconds (6:52.5 to 6:57.6) in winning the four-boat heat. In the finals later in the morning, the Crimson and Gray reached the finish line in 6:55.8 in a race featuring five Top 11 boards. Hard-charging No. 11 Smith was second (6:57.6) followed by the seventh-ranked Cardinals (7:00.0), No. 10 Hamilton (7:02.3) and co-host and No. 5 Clark (7:08.86).
The second varsity eight also qualified for its grand final, placing third (7:14.1) in its heat behind Wesleyan and Smith and then fourth in its second race (7:21.1) with Hamilton sandwiched between the aforementioned Cardinals and Pioneers.
The Boynton Hillers third varsity eight claimed bronze, clocking a time of 7:30.7 to finish behind Smith A and Wesleyan and ahead of Smith B.
WPI women's rowing returns to the water next Saturday, entertaining Connecticut College, Simmons, No. 13 Rochester and No. 4 Williams for the Barbara Donahue Cup on Lake Quinsigamond.
