WORCESTER -- WPI wrestling defeated Brockport for the first time in program history to headline a home quad meet held in the Sports & Recreation Center on Saturday. The Engineers knocked off the Golden Eagles 33-22 after dropping a tight 26-24 decision to New England College and falling 34-11 to Southern Maine.
In other matches on Saturday, Southern Maine bested Brockport 47-3 and New England College get past the Golden Eagles 32-13. WPI is now 5-9 on the season while Southern Maine improves to 9-6, New England College evens its record at 5-5 and Brockport falls to 1-11 overall.
The Engineers and Brockport have met nearly every year since the Sports & Recreation Center opened over a decade ago and the Crimson and Gray jumped ahead 12-0 Saturday with a forfeit for
Tanner Thatcher (Blairstown, NJ) and 125 pounds and a second period pin by
Charlie Pavis (Bethlehem, PA) at 133.
After Brockport countered with consecutive pins at 141 and 149 pounds,
Zachary Rioux (Nashua, NH) got WPI back on track with a 16-2 major decision at 157. The Golden Eagles took their only lead of the match at 165 when a tech fall put the visitors ahead 17-16 with just four bouts remaining.
The hosts then rattled off three straight wins to earn its first-ever win over Brockport.
Ethan Edmondson (Milford, CT) got the rally going with a 16-1 tech fall at 5:10 of his bout at 174 pounds before
Joseph Tully (Carver, MA) collected a quick pin at 1:18 of his match at 184.
Joe Bernard (Stratham, NH) received a forfeit to secure the victory for the hosts before Brockport's
Nick Franco (Farmingdale, NY) closed the action with his third win of the day with a pin at heavyweight.
WPI nearly avenged a lost to New England College on Sunday at the NEWA Duals but fell 26-24 to the Pilgrams in match that went 5-5 among the 10 matches. After Thatcher beat the second period buzzer with a pin at 125, NEC captured the next four bouts to surge ahead 21-6 midway through.
The Engineers came fighting back and took the next four matches to reclaim the lead 24-21.
Ryan Hsu (Norwood, MA) got the Engineers going with a first period fall at 165 and Edmondson followed with an 8-3 decision at 184. Tully then made quick work of his 184-pound opponent, pinning him in just 14 seconds before
Nicolas LeSieur (Walnut Creek, CA) posted a 14-8 win at 197 to put the hosts ahead only to see New England College win the match as heavyweight
Marcos Colon (Haverhill, MA) registered a 19-4 tech fall at 3:49.
In the middle matchup of the day against the Huskies, the hosts saw
Bud West (Concord, MA) deliver a 18-5 major decision at 157 pounds, Edmondson post a 6-3 triumph at 174 and Tully, the two-time reigning NEWA Rookie of the Week, continue his strong run with a pin just 1:49 into his bout at 184.
For the day, Edmondson and Tully were both 3-0 with Tully, the fourth-ranked NEWA wrestler at 184 pounds, amassing three pins totaling just 3:31 of mat time. Thatcher, who is fifth in the NEWA at 125 pounds went 2-1 on the day.
WPI is off until Friday, February 9th when they begin a back-to-back weekend by venturing to Springfield to tangle with Western New England at 7pm. The three visiting teams are all back in action on Saturday, February 3rd. Brockport heads to Berea, OH for the 37th annual John Summa Invitational hosted by Baldwin-Wallace, Southern Maine makes its way to Western New England for a quad with Plymouth State and Trinity and New England College heads to the state of Rhode Island for matches at Rhode Island College and Roger Williams.
