WORCESTER -- In the final team tune-up of 2023-24 before the NEWMAC Championships, the WPI men's swimming and diving teams produced 16 first place finishes at the Menck Invitational on Senior Day Saturday Afternoon at the Sports and Recreation Center.
Eight Engineer seniors,
Austin Aguirre (Santa Maria, CA),
Griffin Bowers (Ambler, PA),
Jack Brazer (Bolton, MA),
Owen Krause (Potomac Falls, VA),
Alex Masiero (Richmond, MA),
Matthew Segui (Stanton, CA),
Aaron Swann (Venice, FL),
Angus Zuwallack (Falmouth, MA) were honored at the meet.
The first victory of the day came in the 25 Fly as
Christopher Smith (Northbridge, MA) came away with a blazing time of 10.63 to capture the victory. This was followed by a first place performance by
Gavin McCullough (Geneva, IL) in the 100 Free with a time of 48.79 as the Engineers took the top-3 spots.
Swann picked up the next win with a 55.00 time in the 100 Back, leading the way for another podium sweep and then came away with another victory in the 200 Back Mixed event with a time of 2:06.79.
Fraser Milligan (Middlebury, VT) clocked in with a time of 2:18.86 in the 200 Breast Mixed and then
Devin Mihaichuk (New Lenox, IL) took home the 200 Fly Mixed victory in 2:02.66.
Smith came away with another win, this time in the 100 Fly with a time of 52.17 followed by a
Sean Tesoro (Reading, MA) victory in the 50 Free with a time of 22.33.
Krause took home the 50 Breast victory, leading the way for a podium sweep with a time fo 27.26 followed by the first men's relay win of the night as Tesoro, Aguirre,
Dean Doubek (Arnold, MD) and
Matt Crane (Groton, MA) finished with a time of 40.11 in the 100 Free Relay.
McCullough took home the 200 Free victory in 1:48.80 while Krause earned another win, this time in the 25 Breast with a time of 12.32.
Samuel Witscher (Portland, OR) closed out the wins by bringing home the victory in the 1000 Free in 10:17.24.
On the diving side of things,
Val Corrente (East Setauket, NY) came away with a pair of victories in the 1 and 3-Meter Dive with scores of 194.40 and 193.05.
The squad finished the event with 46 top-3 finishes at the meet.
Select athletes will compete next weekend in the GNAC Meet, held Friday, February 2nd - Sunday, February 4th in WPI's Sports & Recreation Center. Actions begins all three days at 10am.
After that, it's the NEMWAC Championships hosted by MIT on Thursday, February 22nd - Sunday, February 25th. The meet begins at 4pm on Thursdays with 10am prelims and 6pm finals the final three days.
