Second Half Surge Pushes Nationally-Ranked MIT Past Field Hockey

Cambridge, MA --- WPI field hockey fell to nationally-ranked MIT 3-1 in a NEWMAC matchup at Jack Barry Field on Saturday afternoon.

With the result, WPI falls to 6-6 overall with a 3-2 mark in NEWMAC play as the hosting Engineers, who were ranked No. 16 in the latest NCAA Division III NFHCA Coaches Poll, advance to 9-3 and 5-0 in league action.

Through the first half of action, MIT outshot the visiting Engineers 18-3 forcing Ella Moreau (Huntington, MA) to make 10 saves in the opening 30 minutes. The hosts registered 14 consecutive shots before Arie Lang (West Hartford, CT) posted the first strike of the afternoon that was steered away by Maeve Zimmer (Rockville, MD). Abbey Powers (Halifax, MA) and Lauren Meinhold (Boxboro, MA) added to the offensive attack for the Crimson and Gray but were unable to connect as both squads entered the half scoreless.

MIT's Janie Thomas (Houston, TX) was the first to find the back of the cage on the afternoon just 34 seconds into the third quarter with an Ingrid Tomovski (Bosch en Duin, Netherlands) assist. A pair of back-to-back penalty corners for the hosts led to the second MIT goal by Audrey Oh (Longmeadow, MA) to extend the lead to 2-0.

Emma Barton (Hopewell Junction, NY) and Emily Sollecito (Bedford, MA) attempted to decrease the deficit with shots on frame that were kept clear by Zimmer. MIT took advantage of its penalty corner opportunity as Faith Choe (San Diego, CA) inserted to Ashley Lederman (Villanova, PA) who connected with Tomovski on the opposite side of the circle for a clean strike at goal in the 48th minute.

Meinhold then registered four shots and three of which remained on target before Eve Martineau (Greene, ME) corralled the inserted ball from Sollecito and slipped a ball back to Meinhold for the shot that passed through Zimmer's feet to put the visiting Engineers on the board leading to the 3-1 final in Cambridge.

Moreau posted 11 saves on the afternoon on 14 shots faced as Zimmer recorded seven saves in the victory for MIT.

The hosting Engineers enjoyed advantages in shots (30-12), shots on goal (14-8) and penalty corners (25-6).

The Crimson and Gray return to Worcester next Saturday as they are set to host Wheaton in a NEWMAC contest at 1pm as MIT turns to non-conference action hosting Gordon on Wednesday evening.
