WORCESTER -- The WPI women's swimming and diving team split its season-opener, as the Engineers squared off against Ithaca and Roger Williams. The Boynton Hillers fell to Ithaca, 164-134, but beat Roger Williams in a tight contest, 145-135.
The women's team started things off with a bang, taking first and fourth place in the opening 400 Medley Relay. The team of
Leah Kolb (Canton, MI),
Milena Whitney (Bedford, NH),
Sarah Kang (Richmond, VA) and
Lada DiMascolo (Puyallup, WA) combined to win in a mark of 4:01.29, the only team to break the 4:02.00 barrier.
DiMascolo, kept the party rolling and made it three straight event wins for WPI, as they claimed they the 200 free in a time of 1:58.89, the only swimmer to break the two minute barrier. Before the 200 free,
Kylie Herbstzuber (Medfield, MA) won the 1000 free in convincing fashion, taking the race in a time of 10:48.39, the only swimmer under 11 minutes.
The pair of distance swimmers meet in the 500 freestyle with Herbstzuber getting the better of DiMascolo, finishing in a time of 5:21.75, ahead of DiMascolo's 5:25.56, as the pair took the top two spots.
The pair clashed again in the 200 IM, with DiMascolo getting the better of Herbsztuber as they finished second in a time of 2:16.33, ahead of Herbsztuber's fifth place finish.
DiMascolo's teammates from the Medley relay, also found success, as Whitney claimed a third in both breaststrokes, posting a time of 1:08.92 in the shorter of the events and a 2:34.36 in the longer of the two events.
Kang, like Whitney is a first-year, and also posted multiple top three finishes as she placed runner-up in the 100 back, posting a time of 1:00.43 and repeated her second-place in the 100 fly, as she stopped the clock in 59.61.
On the diving boards, junior
Katrina Yurista (Laramie, WY), who qualified for the NCAA Regionals Diving competition last year placed fifth in the 3-meter, scoring 205.79 points, and sixth in the 1-meter, totaling 170.32.
In the last relay of the day, the 200 Free Relay, the team of
Kristina MacLeod (Jackson Hole, WY), Kang,
Katrina Waite (Falmouth, ME) and
Audrey Dino (St. Louis, MO) finished third in a close race, stopping the clock in 1:41.92. Earlier in the meet, Macleod, placed 4th in the 50 free and 3rd in the 100 with Waite just behind in the 100 taking 4th.
WPI is next in action on Friday in a home meet against Babson, Brandeis, Coast Guard and Smith on 5:30pm.
