Newport, RI --- A goal in the 87th minute of action by Salve Regina forced a 1-1 tie with the WPI men's soccer team on Saturday afternoon.
The Engineers (7-2-3, 0-0-3 NEWMAC), ranked 23rd in the most recent United Soccer Coaches Top 25 and second withing Region II, picked up their third conference tie of the year, all of which coming in the 1-1 fashion. The Seahawks (4-6-1, 1-0-1) earned their first draw of the year, also remaining unbeaten in conference action.
WPI got on the board early in the 10th minute of action when
Fabio Bastida-Andreu (Logrono, Spain) perfectly placed himself on a corner kick. The Engineers utilized a throw in a midfield that got headed down past the goal line by a Salve defender resulting in a corner opportunity. After a beautiful insertion from
Anthony Previte (Andover, MA), Bastida-Andreu elevated over the crowd to send the header shot past the diving Seahawk netminder and into the top right corner of the net for the score.
WPI got off eight shots in the first half with a pair coming on goal to Salve Regina's five. However, WPI's goalkeeper
Savio Ketnouvong (Paxton, MA) made a trio of saves to keep the Engineers ahead after 45 minutes of action.
In the second half, Salve Regina got an early opportunity to even the score when they drew a penalty kick in the 59th minute of the game, after a Seahawk was tackled in the box. However, Ketnouvong came up big, guessing correctly and diving to his right to save the attempt and keep WPI up 1-0.
Ultimately, on the team's fourth corner of the game, Salve was able to eke out the game-tying goal in the 87th minute of play. After the initial corner kick try got denied,
Jordan Borges (Milford, MA) who inserted the corner, rounded up the rebound and sent it back into the box where
Daniel Goba (North Kingstown, R.I.) was able to use his head and flick the ball to the far left side of the goal for the ultimate equalizer.
Aaron Vaz (Medford, MA) attempted WPI's last shot at the net, a long strike, with a couple minutes left but the game in a stalemate.
Vaz finished the day with three shot attempts while Bastida-Andreu earned his team-leading fifth goal of the season and Ketnouvong picked up four saves on the day.
The Engineers are back in action next Saturday, Oct. 12 when they play host to Wheaton at H. Carr Field at Alumni Stadium at 1pm while Salve Regina returns to the pitch in non-conference action at home vs. Westfield State on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 7pm.
