Men’s Swimming and Diving Bests Babson and Brandeis, Defeated by Coast Guard

WORCESTER -- The Engineers of WPI (3-2) hosted three other teams Friday the first of November, squaring off against Babson, Brandeis and Coast Guard. WPI emerged victorious over Babson (147.50-139.50) and Brandeis (194-85) but fell to the 2024 NEWMAC runner-up Coast Guard (217-76). 
 
In the opening 200 Medley Relay, the team of Christopher Smith (Northbridge, MA), Bora Hurst (West Palm Beach, FL), Dean Doubek (Arnold, MD), and Sean Tesoro (Reading, MA) placed 2nd overall, recording a time of 1:36.21. 
 
The quartet, all posted strong individual swims as well, with Smith, a junior tying for 4th in the 100 back in a time of 54.04, placing 5th in the 200 back in time of 1:58.73 and finishing runner-up in the 200 IM, where his time of 1:58.15, was just one of two results under 1:59.00.
 
His relay mates also threw down some strong swims with Hurst placing 10th in the 200 breaststroke ( 2:21.55), Doubek swimming a strong 53.09 to place 3rd in the 100 fly, as well as finishing 3rd in the 50 free, hitting the wall in 21.90. 
 
Tesoro, a sophomore and the last member of the relay, finished 4th in the 200 freestyle posting a strong result of 1:47.48 and placed 2nd in the 100 freestyle a few events later, stopping the clock in a time of 47.75. Joining him in those two events were fellow sophomore, Nolan Schlessman (Sudbury, MA) who placed 6th in the 200 (1:49.85) and 8th in the 100 (48.61). 
 
The pair of sophomores along with the previously mentioned Doubek, were joined by Gavin McCullough (Geneva, IL) in the last relay of the evening, the 400 Free Relay, where the Engineers earned their second runner-up finish, stopping the clock in 3:10.63.
 
Strong contributions to the evening's success were not limited to relay performers as diver Val Corrente (East Setauket, NY) earned 2nd place in both the 1 and 3 meter events. In the 1-meter, Corrente posted a result of 201.60, and in the 3-meter event scored 186.35 points, both of which were season's bests.3-meter event scored 186.35 points, both of which were season's bests. 
 
In the 1000 freestyle, senior Aidan Greenfield (Northport, NY) finished 4th overall in a time of 10:38.01 and fellow senior Fraser Milligan (Middlebury, VT) finished 6th in a time of 10:41.61. In the 500 freestyle, it would Milligan who would place 4th as he stopped the clock in 5:06.50 and Greenfield not to far behind in 5:06.89. Fellow senior Jack Duryea (Sag Harbor, NY), posted the fastest time by a WPI Engineer in the 100 breaststroke as he stopped the clock in a time of 1:02.29.
 
WPI next races against Holy Cross, Assumption and Clark at the Worcester City Championships, a week from Saturday at 10am at the WPI Sports and Recreation Center.
