WORCESTER -- The WPI Women's Swimming and Diving Team (4-2) hosted four other teams in a Quint-Duel on Friday the 1st of November. The Engineers emerged victorious in three of the contests defeating Babson (163-123), Brandeis (197-76) and Smith (185-109), but fell to the 2024 NEWMAC runner-up team Coast Guard (189-92).
WPI claimed first overall in the 200 Medley Relay as the team of
Audrey Dino (St. Louis, MO),
Alia Ureta (Hackensack, NJ),
Sarah Kang (Richmond, VA), and
Leah Kolb (Canton, MI) posted the fastest time of the evening, stopping the clock in 1:50.93.
Kang, a first year, took top honors in the 100 fly as well, as she hit the wall in 59.00, winning the event by .10. Kang also placed 2nd in the 100 back, recording a time of 1:00.18. She would also take part of the 400 Free Relay, which finished runner-up in a time of 3:45.88. Joining her on that relay were
Katrina Waite (Falmouth, ME),
Lada DiMascolo (Puyallup, WA) and
Kristina MacLeod (Jackson Hole, WY).
Kang wasn't alone in placing near the top of their events. Waite and MacLeod teamed up in the 50 free, stopping the clock in 26.00 and 26.02 finishing in 4th and 5th place respectively, just ahead of teammate Kolb, who placed 6th in a time of 26.08.
Kolb bettered her result in the 100 back where she finished 5th in a time of 1:01.85. Kolb's teammates on the medley relay also but in strong performances, as Dino placed 8th in the 100 back and Ureta finished 3rd in the 100 breaststroke, nipping under 1:10 as she hit the wall in 1:09.99. She also put up strong performances in the 200 breast, where she finished 5th in a time of 2:37.59.
On the diving boards, Junior
Katrina Yurista (Laramie, WY) earned runner-up accolades in both the one meter and three meter events. In the one meter, she scored 214.05 points, while in the three meter she scored 214.70 points, both of which were season's bests.
In the longer events, first years
Allie Marvell (Nashua, NH) and
Kate Creusere (Las Cruces, NM) put in strong performances in the 1000, with Marvell placing 5th in the 1000 free, 11:28.24, and Creusure placing 5th in the 200 fly with a time of 2:24.64.
The two also swam the 500 placing 9th and 6th respectively, behind junior
Kylie Herbstzuber (Medfield, MA) who placed 5th in a time of 5:30.92.
The WPI Engineers are next in action at the Worcester City Championships against Division I Holy Cross, Division II Assumption and fellow NEWMAC member Clark. The meet will take place a week from Saturday at 10am at the WPI Sports and Rec Center.
