New Haven, CT --- The WPI Women's Swimming and Diving team (4-3) fell to host Southern Connecticut State 131.50-91.50 in a late-night duel meet in New Haven.
The Engineers were led by
Katrina Yurista (Larmaie, WY) who placed first in both of the diving events. Other event winners include
Lada DiMascolo (Puyallup, WA),
Sarah Kang (Richmond, VA) and
Milena Whitney (Bedford, NH). The women's 200 free relay anchored by senior
Kristina MacLeod (Jackson Hole, WY) tied with Southern to end the meet in a time of 1:41.77.
Yurista, a junior who last year qualified for the NCAA Regional Diving Championships, took the 1m board with a score of 179.40. On the 3m board, the junior earned a score of 187.95
On the 200 free relay, Macleod, who was joined by
Leah Kolb (Canton, MI),
Katrina Waite (Falmouth, ME) and
Audrey Dino (St. Louis, MO) closed in a 24.84 to bring the Engineers back into first place. Earlier in the evening, Kolb lead off the 400 medley relay and was joined by Whitney, Kang, and DiMascolo, with the quartet recording a time of 4:06.07.
Whitney, a first-year, would go on to later claim victory in the 100 breaststroke, recording a mark of 1:10.30 to take the win with a margin of 0.17 seconds. Kang, Whitney's fellow first-year, took the win in the 100 back, recording a mark of 1:00.26, just two events after she finished runner-up in the 100 fly, where she recorded a time of 59.44. DiMascolo, who anchored the 400 Medley relay, earned top honors in the 200 freestyle recording a mark of 2:00.49. They also earned a third place finish in the 500 free, where they stopped the clock in a time of 5:30.06, behind teammate,
Kylie Herbstzuber (Medford, MA).
Herbstzuber, a junior, had two very close races, finishing runner-up in both the 1000 and 500 freestyles. In the longer of the two, she finished in a time of 11:05.18, just a little off their season best and in the 500, the junior recorded a time of 5:27.08.
Close races for second were a theme for the evening, as Kolb joined in the party by taking second place in the 50 freestyle, hitting the wall in a time of 25.25, just .01 ahead of the third-place finisher.
The Engineers will next race this coming Saturday, November 23rd, at home against Trinity, Tufts and Williams.
