WORCESTER -- The WPI Swimming and Diving team played host to the NESCAC trio of Trinity, Tufts, and Williams on Saturday after The Engineers (4-5) beat Trinity (201-91) but fell to Tufts (213-84) and to Willaims (229-69). The Engineers had strong showing in both the swimming and diving competitions.
The team kicked things off with a very strong showing in the 200 Medley as the team of
Christopher Smith (Northbridge, MA),
Jack Duryea (Sag Harbor, NY),
Dean Doubek (Arnold, MD) and
Sean Tesoro (Reading, MA) dropped a new season-best time of 1:34.46.
Duryea, a senior, continued his success from the relay into his individual events. Int the 100 breaststroke, he swam a new personal best of 1:01.55, a time that was good for 12th overall. He additionally, posted a season best time in the 50 free at the end of the meet as his 22.83 eclipsed his previous best by .01.
The New York native was not the only member of that relay to find individual success, as all three of his teammates, made strong impacts in their individual events as well. Smith, a junior, notched three top five finishes. In the 100 backstroke, he stopped the clock in 52.58, which not only was good for fourth but also stands as a new season best. In the 200 back, placed one spot better, as the junior hit the wall in 1:55.04. He saved the best for last as he was run-down in the last 50 of the 100 fly and had to settle for second place with a time of 51.22, a result that also stands as new season best.
Doubek and Tesoro, also had strong showings in their individual events, albeit each only swam two. Doubek, a sophomore, placed third in the 50 free, as he posted a time of 21.36. He also contested the 100 fly along with Smith, and finished in sixth overall, hitting the wall in 51.98, a season best time by nearly a second.
Tesoro had similar finishes, as the sophomore placed seventh in the 200 freestyle, recording a time of 1:46.68 but had a much better showing in the 100 freestyle, where his 46.80 earned him fourth place.
Doubek and Tesoro teamed up again on the 200 free relay to close the meet out. The pair were joined by
Gavin McCullough (Geneva, IL) and
Nolan Schlessman (Sudbury, MA) and the quartet recorded a result of 1:25.80, a time that was good for fourth overall.
Top ten finishes were not contained to just the A-relay swimmers, however. Sophomore
Lucas Pralle (Wayland, MA) was WPI's top finisher in the 200 fly, earning sixth place with his time of 1:59.87. He also joined Smith and Doubek in the 100 fly, where his 53.31, which was good for eighth place, made him the third WPI swimmer in the event amongst the top 10.
On the boards the Engineers kept up the streak of top-10 finishes. In the 1m competition,
Tom Fitzgerald (East Longmeadow, MA) and
Val Corrente (East Setauket, NY) scored 194.90 and 180.45 points respectively, which were good for seventh and eight place. On the 3m boards Fitzgerald scored 184.05 points, which was good enough sixth place and Corrente earned 175.60 points, earning another eighth place finish.
WPI next returns to the pool on December 6th as they host their annual mid-season meet, the Gompei Invitational.
