WORCESTER -- The WPI men's swimming and diving team hosted Holy Cross, Assumption, and Clark for the annual Worcester City Championships. Division I Holy Cross, walked away with the Paul Parenteau Trophy, named in honor of the founder of the Holy Cross Team and figure in the Worcester swimming community for over 40 years.
Holy Cross scored 1034 points, beating out host team WPI, who wracked up 810 points to finish in second place ahead of D II Assumption's 412 and fellow NEWMAC member Clark's 247 points.
The Engineer's relays put in strong performances across all of the contested events, with the 400 Medley Relay team of
Christopher Smith (Northbridge, MA)
Bora Hurst (West Palm Beach, FL),
Dean Doubek (Arnold, MD) and
Sean Tesoro (Reading, MA) taking second overall in a result of 3:38.28.
Tesoro, a sophomore, was in fact part of all of WPI's A- relays, none of which finished less than third overall. In the 200 free relay, Tesoro anchored the all sophomore relay of Doubek,
Andrew Van De Water (Stratham, NH) and
Nolan Schlessman (Sudbury, MA) to a third place finish, stopping the clock in a time of 1:28.05. In the 200 Medley, Van De Water, Smith, Doubek and Tesoro placed third again in a mark of 1:37.81 and the team of Smith, Van De Water, Schlessman and Tesoro once again placed third on the podium, recording a mark of 3:13.94.
Individually Smith, Doubek and Tesoro improved upon their relay results, with each claiming top honors in an individual event. Doubek, took the win in the 100 backstroke, winning in a mark of 54.42. Tesoro, a few events later hit the wall first in the 50 free, winning by a margin of .04 as the Reading native stopped the clock in 21.67. Smith joined the party a few events later, as the junior got his hands on to the wall first in the 100 fly, winning with a time of 51.68, the only swimmer under the 52.00 mark.
Sucess was not contained to the sprint events alone, however as
Jacob Antonovich (Fairfax, VT) placed third in the 1000 free, earning a time of 10:47.74. In the 200 backstroke, senior
Aidan Greenfield (Northport, NY) took third as well, hitting the wall in 2:06.94. In the final individual event of the afternoon, the 400 IM, senior
Fraser Milligan (Middlebury, VT) swam a time of 4:24.43, which was good for second overall.
The Engineers were not limited to just the swimming pool as divers
Val Corrente (East Setauket, NY) and
Tom Fitzgerald (East Longmeadow, MA) placed third and fourth respectively on both the 1 and 3m boards. For Corrente, the scores of 211.50 and 199.80 were both season highs as were Fitzgerald's scores of 189.40 and 197.75.
Holy Cross's
John Greiner was a perfect 3-for-3 in individual events this afternoon wining the 1000 free, 200 fly and 500 free and walked away from the meet as the Justin Ferris Male Swimmer of the Meet Award winner. His teammate,
Griffin Casey, swept both diving boards and was awarded the Whit Griffith Diver of the Meet Award.
WPI is next in action, Friday, November the 15th as they head to New Haven, CT, to square off against Southern Connecticut.
