Women’s Swimming and Diving Takes Third as Engineers host Worcester City Championships

WORCESTER -- The WPI women's swimming and diving program hosted the Worcester City Championships for the second consecutive year on Saturday.

The Engineers placed third overall, scoring 657 points, defeating NEWMAC rival Clark (308 points) but falling in a close battle to D II Assumption (661 points) with D I Holy Cross running away with the win scoring a total of 1127 points,  The Crusaders were awarded the Callie Taffe Trophy, which is named in honor of Ms. Callie Taffe, who was an outstanding competitior and school record holder for Holy Cross and was an AIAW All-American in 1981. 
 
The meet started with the Women's 400 Medley Relay, where the team of Leah Kolb (Canton, MI), Milena Whitney (Bedford, NH), Kaitlyn Grove (Cheshire, CT) and Lada DiMascolo (Puyallup, WA) combined for a time of 4:10.44 to take fourth overall, placing behind only Holy Cross's relays. 
 
Kolb built upon that success and in the 200 Free Relay improved her placing to take second overall alongside Sarah Kang ((Richmond, VA), Katrina Waite (Falmouth, ME), and Kristina MacLeod (Jackson Hole, WY) with the quartet finishing in a time of 1:42.15. The B Relay also put a strong showing as the team of DiMascolo, Audrey Dino (St. Louis, MO), Anna Callaghan (Yorktown Heights, NY) and Whitney finished fifth overall in a time of 1:45.59. 
 
The team finished the session with two third  place finishes as Dino, Whitney, Kang and DiMascolo combined for a result of 1:53.98 in the 200 Medley and Dimascolo, Kang, Kolb and MacLeod ended the meet with a bronze in the 400 Free Relay stopping the clock in 3:46.75. 
 
Individually, Kylie Herbstzuber (Medfield, MA) had three strong performances. The junior won the 1000 free in a time of 11:02.91, the only swimmer to dip under the 11:10 barrier. In the 100 breaststroke, she was the fastest Engineer, taking fifth overall in a time of 1:12.72 and in the 400 IM, she equaled that mark, finishing in 4:59.78, dipping under the 5:00 barrier for the first time this season. 
 
DiMascolo was just behind Herbstzuber in the 400 IM, finishing sixth in a time of 5:01.43, and also added a fifth place to her relay accolades in the 200 breaststroke. Her teammate on the medley relay, Whitney, took third overall in the 200 breast, as the first year hit the wall in 2:33.81. Kang, another first year, put in a strong performance in the 200 back, finishing in a mark of 2:08.26. Kang also had a strong showing earlier in the meet, finishing fourth overall in a time of 25.79.
 
On the diving boards, junior Katrina Yurista (Laramie, WY) finished with 211.65 points on the 1-meter board and recorded a season-high 224.00 on the 3-meter board.
 
Holy Cross's Devin Brindle who won the 100 free and 100 fly as well as placing second in the 200 free was awarded the Female Swimmer of the Meet Award, which is named in honor of Cathy Desrosiers (Clark '82), while Brenna Short, also of Holy Cross, took the Beth Ferraro (Clark '88) Diver of the Meet Award.  
 
WPI is next in action, Friday, November the 15th as they head to New Haven, CT, to square off against Southern Connecticut.
