Adams & Sevilla Sweep NEWMAC Men’s Basketball Weekly Accolades

NEWMAC Men's Basketball Offensive & Defensive Athlete of the Week - John Adams & Donovan Sevilla
Westwood, MA --- Seniors John Adams (Douglas, MA) and Donovan Sevilla (San Ramon, CA) were selected as the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men's Basketball Offensive and Defensive Athletes of the Week for the week ending on February 18th.

Adams averaged 20 points and nine boards for the Engineers as the Crimson and Gray won both contests last week to secure the program's 12th overall and ninth outright NEWMAC regular season championship. The senior forward kicked off his week by posting his sixth-consecutive double-double, ninth in his last 10 games, 14th of the season and 37th of his career with a game-high 24 points and 11 rebounds in a 72-63 triumph of Springfield on Wednesday. On Saturday, Adams shot 8-of-9 from the floor en route to a 16 point and seven rebound effort in just 20 minutes in a 79-46 road win at Wheaton. For the week, Adams was 15-of-20 from the field with seven assists, a pair of steals and a block.

On the other end of the floor, Sevilla highlighted a defensive effort that allowed just 54.5 per game last week to help WPI to a 2-0 week leading to the program's 12th NEWMAC regular season championship. The senior guard led all players with four steals in a 72-63 win over Springfield in Harrington Auditorium before adding another one in a 97-46 road victory at Wheaton over the weekend. Sevilla then chipped in with four boards off the defensive glass in addition to being WPI's second top scorer on the week at 11 points per game. The Crimson and Gray defense finished the regular season ranked sixth in NCAA Division III in fewest points allowed at 52.8 points per game and will be the top seed in next week's NEWMAC Tournament.

This week marks the fourth weekly nod for Adams and eighth of his career with the most recent coming at the end of January. Sevilla earns his third of the season bringing the squad's total to seven weekly honors during the 2023-2024 campaign.

WPI (21-4, 14-2 NEWMAC) will enjoy a quarterfinal bye and await its destiny as the Engineers will face the winner of tonight's fourth-seeded Babson and fifth-seeded Coast Guard matchup on Thursday evening at 7pm in Harrington Auditorium in the semifinal round for a trip to the NEWMAC Men's Basketball championship.
