Smith Sets New School Standard for Men's Swimming and Diving at Day Two of NEWMAC Meet

Cambridge, MA --- A school record dropped in the 200 IM as the WPI men's swimming and diving team sits in second place with 328 points after day two of the NEWMAC Championships at the Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center. 
 
Christopher Smith (Northbridge, MA) netted his first career school record following a seventh place finish in the 200 IM, touching the wall in 1:51.86. He erased 1.29 seconds off Seth MacDonald's 1:53.15 time set seven years ago (2017) at the NEWMAC Championships. 
 
The night began with a bang as Dean Doubek (Arnold, MD), Nolan Schlessman (Sudbury, MA), Matt Crane (Groton, MA), and Jack Brazer (Bolton, MA) came together for a 1:23.03, second place performance in the 200 Free Relay to start things off. The foursome found themselves on the podium after combining for the team's fastest time of the season. 
 
Smith, Austin Aguirre (Santa Maria, CA), Sean Tesoro (Reading, MA), and Andrew Van De Water (Stratham, NH) also came up with a second place performance, in the B Final, for a ninth place overall finish with a time of 1:25.01 to add to the point total. 
 
Following the relay another foursome of competitors took part in the A and B finals of the 500 Free as Fraser Milligan (Middlebury, VT) netted an eighth place finish with a time of 4:40.38, a career best for the junior and the third fastest time in at least the last 16 seasons of WPI swimming. 
 
In the B final, Aidan Greenfield (Northport, NY) netted at 12th place, 4:44.72 time followed by Aaron Swann's (Venice, FL) 16th place 4:48.88 finish and Sam Witscher's (Portland, OR) 4:50.91 17th place finish. 
 
In addition to Smith's school record time in the 200 IM, Aguirre added more points to the WPI total with an 18th place, 1:56.93 finish in the event. 
 
Five different Engineers competed in the 50 Free final with Brazer leading things off with an eighth place finish in 20.83, the fastest time of the year and the fifth fastest time in at least the last 16 seasons. Following Brazer was Doubek in 10th place with a time of 21.16, Tesoro in 13th place with a time of 21.40, Crane in 14th place with a time of 21.49 and Schlessman in 15th place with a time of 21.58. 
 
The men's squad closed out day two of competition with a fourth place finish in the 400 Medley Relay as Smith, Owen Krause (Potomac Falls, VA), Doubek and Brazer combined for a time of 3:23.78. 
 
At the end of night two the team point total stands as follows.

The Engineers move on to day three of the NEWMAC Championships on Saturday with prelim action kicking off at 10 a.m. and the finals starting at 6 p.m. The events on day three include the 400 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Free, 100 Breast, 100 Back, Men's 1-Meter Dive and conclude with the 200 Medley Relay.
