Springfield, MA ---
Charlie Pavis' (Bethlehem, PA) first period pin in the final match of the night capped a comeback that saw WPI capture the five of the last six bouts, including the final three as the Engineers went on the road Friday night and defeated Western New England 25-18 in a New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) matchup.
Â
WPI is now 6-9 on the season while the host Golden Bears dip to 10-9 overall in dual meets.
Â
Things couldn't have started any better for the Crimson and Gray as
Mason Medina (Orlando, FL) began the action with a pin at 6:27 of the fifth-ranked regional wrestler at 141 pounds.  The hosts came back with three consecutive major decisions to surge ahead 12-6. Â
Peter Charnley (Lyman, NH) got the run started with a 13-3 victory at 149 and then regionally ranked wrestlers took center stage for the Western New England as
Cam Hines (Killingworth, CT), ranked eighth at 157 and
Sean Monteiro (Wilbraham, MA), ranked second at 165, recorded 8-0 and 22-11 triumphs respectively.Â
Â
Ethan Edmondson (Milford, CT) got WPI back on track at 174 pounds. The junior, who cracked the regional rankings today in eighth, posted a 6-3 win before fourth-ranked
Joseph Tully (Carver, MA) continue his red-hot run with a 12-1 major decision at 184 to put the guests ahead 13-12.Â
Â
The Engineer advantage was short lived however as Western New England's
Griffin Ostrom (Merrimack, NH) registered a fall at 3:44 at 197 pounds to give the Golden Bears a 18-13 edge.Â
Â
It was all WPI after that as
Trevor Bowen (Frenchtown, NJ) gave the Crimson and Gray a key 8-4 win at heavyweight to narrow the gap to two and the Engineers went ahead when
Tanner Thatcher (Blairstown, NJ), the seventh-ranked Northeast region 125-pounder notched a 9-6 decision to give the Engineers a 19-18 bulge and force a winner-take-all bout at 133. Pavis made sure the visitors went home happy as the NEWA's eighth-ranked 133-pounder delivered his fourth pin of the season just 1:45 into the final match.
Â
WPI will have a quick turnaround, hosting Springfield on Saturday at noon in the Sports & Recreation Center. Western New England is off until Saturday, February 17th when they entertain Norwich at 11am.
