WORCESTER --- WPI Director of Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics
Dana L. Harmon announced today the hiring of
Mickey Cahoon as the head coach of volleyball for the Engineers. Cahoon arrives at WPI after 17 successful coaching years just down Park Ave. at the helm of the Clark University Cougars volleyball program.
"We welcome
Mickey Cahoon to WPI and are excited he is joining Goat Nation," remarked Harmon. "Mickey has been a proven winner during his coaching career as well as involved with various administrative functions that will serve him well in his work for us. We are looking forward to Mickey's leadership of our volleyball program."
Under his tutelage, Clark volleyball enjoyed its most success in program history with Cahoon totaling 217 victories, qualifying for the postseason 11 times in the ultra-competitive NEWMAC including back-to-back appearances in the NEWMAC Championships and the first NCAA Tournament win in school history. His 2015 and 2016 squads reached the NEWMAC Tournament finals and his 2016 team advanced to the NCAAs where they defeated Montclair State 3-2 in a thrilling match. Cahoon coached eight All-NEWMAC players and a NEWMAC Rookie of the Year during his tenure at Clark. The 2015 NEWMAC Volleyball Coach of the of Year proved his versatility by coaching two sports and guiding the Couguars Men's Tennis program for 15 years, including its first-ever appearance in the NEWMAC Tournament championship match. In addition to his coaching, Cahoon served as the Cougars Academic Support Coordinator in 2022 and 2023 and as the Compliance Assistant/Coordinator from 2008 to 2022.
"I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to serve as Head Volleyball Coach and Physical Education Instructor, stated Cahoon. "I would like to thank Director of Physical Education, Recreation, and Athletics, Dana Harmon for trusting me with leading the Volleyball program. I would also like to thank the members of the search committee, chair Cherise Galasso, Chris Bartley, Wendy Walsh, and Kim Cosenza, as well as the student-athletes and athletic department staff I met with during the search process who all demonstrated such care and passion for WPI. I feel extremely fortunate to join the community here at WPI and cannot wait to get started."
Cahoon arrived at Clark following a highly-successful high school level coaching career. He spent three seasons as head coach at Notre Dame Academy in Hingham where he led the Cougars to a 50-17 overall record and a pair of consecutive trips to the Division II South Sectional Tournament, including a championship appearance in 2006. Previously he had assisted 18-time state champion head coach Tom Turco at Barnstable High School, helping lead the 2003 Red Raiders to the MIAA Division I Championship.
A graduate of Bridgewater State with a BS degree in physical education, Cahoon also has a master's degree in counseling from Boston University. He resides in South Boston with his wife, Jennifer and their son Jett.
