Men’s Soccer Concludes New York Weekend Road Skid with 2-1 Triumph at Skidmore

Saratoga Springs, NY --- The WPI men's soccer program wrapped up its weekend road trip to New York with a 2-1 victory at Skidmore in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, the Engineers stand at 4-0 as the hosting Thoroughbreds drop their first contest and now sit at 0-1-2.

The Engineers and Thoroughbreds exchanged shots throughout the first stanza on the rainy pitch at Wachenheim Field. The hosts had a free kick opportunity that was tracking to the top left corner but was steered away by WPI's Julian Quaresima (East Meadow, NY). The Crimson and Gray responded by bringing the ball down the field as Fabio Bastida-Andreeu (Logrono, Spain) got an initial shot on frame that was stopped by Will Devall (Shoreham, NY) before Bastida-Andreeu rebounded his own strike and tipped it back in for the 26th-minute goal. Skidmore rattled off four more shots with a pair on target that were kept clear by Quaresima.

WPI added another goal in the second half in the 64th minute of play as Mason Perham (Hampden, MA) drove the ball down towards the right side of the box and played back to Brady Burch (South Deerfield, MA) who connected with Tora Ito (Hopkinton, MA) for a header that found the far side of the goal for his first goal of the season.

Just six minutes later, Skidmore had a corner kick opportunity that led to copious looks that were blocked as a Max Heberlein (Marshfield, MA) forced Quaresima to make a diving save that led to a scramble in front of WPI's goal. Hyungbin Kim (Lexington, MA) was on the back side of the scrum and poked in the goal past multiple defenders to keep Skidmore within reach. Colin Goodhines (Longmeadow, MA) was able to record two final strikes but was unable to connect as the Engineers closed out the match for the 2-1 victory.

Quaresima logged five saves in today's win helping the Engineers to a 4-0 start and a 15-match unbeaten streak as WPI outscored its four opponents 9-2 so far this fall. Skidmore's Devall posted four saves in the setback today in the Thoroughbreds first loss of the season.

The Engineers will return to Worcester and will host Dean in non-conference play on Wednesday, September 11, at 7pm. Skidmore will continue NEWMAC action as the Thoroughbreds will travel to Springfield next Saturday to take on the Pride at 3:30pm.
