WORCESTER -- The WPI women's swimming and diving team (4-6) squared off against Adelphi, Bentley and Wellesley in a triple dual meet, beating Adelphi 151-122 but falling to both Wellesley and Bentley, 149-131 and 176-113, respectively. After over a week of training in Puerto Rico, the Engineers, now 5-8, put up multiple strong performances, none more so than junior diver
Katrina Yurista (Laramie, WY).
On the three-meter board, Yurista, over 11 dives scored 478.26 points, and while that only placed second, the score was enough to erase the 11-year school record of 466.00 points set by
Veronica Nikolaki back in 2014. Yurista finished runner-up over six dives in both the 1m and 3m, totaling 247.88 points and 263.62 points.
Fellow Wyomingian senior
Kristina MacLeod (Jackson, WY), also racked in a second place finish as she swam a season best 2:01.69. Not content with the silver, Macleod would earn top honors in the 50 free, winning by just .01 over Wellesley's Arian Mitsuoka, 25.46 to 25.47. She also out dueled Mitsuoka in the 100, taking the win by a comfortable margin of 54.97 to 55.37.
Macleod's winning ways were not limited to just individual events as she along with fellow senior
Audrey Dino (St. Louis, MO) and first years
Veronica Finucane-Tuccio (Excelsior, MN) and
Sarah Kang (Richmond, VA) closed the meet with a win in the 200 free relay, the quartet won by over a second, recording a time of 1:42.11.
Both Finucane-Tuccio and Kang, also found their way to the podium. Finucane-Tuccio was just behind Macleod in the 200, taking 3rd in 2:01.81, equaling her place finish in the 100 free (56.10). The Minnesota native anchored the 200 Medley relay to fourth place finish (1:53.99), taking over from Kang, who recorded the fastest 50 fly split in the field (26.41). Kang, like Macleod, earned three first-place finishes as she hit the wall first in both the 100 back (59.76) and 100 fly (59.14).
Junior
Kylie Herbstzuber (Medfield, MA) led a strong charge in the 500 free, as she claimed victory in 5:32.27, two spots ahead of fellow Engineer,
Allie Marvell (Nashua, NH). Marvell's 5:36.86 was good enough for third overall and came the back of 11:30.04 1000 free, a time which was also good enough for third overall.
The Engineers are next in action this Saturday as they head north to Waterville, ME to swim against Colby.
