Bristol, RI ---
Joseph Tully (Carver, MA) and
Nicolas LeSieur (Walnut Creek, CA) combined for five wins Saturday, including each with pivotal pins in the night cap versus Roger Williams, as WPI wrestling participated in a quadrangular match Saturday versus Trinity, nationally-ranked Johnson & Wales and the host Hawks.
The Engineers (8-5) dropped the opening two contests of the day, falling to Trinity 21-19 and No. 5 Johnson & Wales 42-7 before registering a pulsating 28-18 triumph over Roger Williams. The other two matches of the day including Johnson & Wales besting Trinity 46-3 and Roger Williams knocking off Trinity 37-10.
WPI led Roger Willams 16-9 after six bouts but the Hawks had momentum headed into the 174-pound match, a contest that featured Tully, fourth in the most recent National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Northeast rankings against the third-ranked wrestler. Tully trailed early before taking the lead in the third period and then gave the Engineers important team points by pinning his opponent with 16 seconds remaining in the match.
Roger Williams then posted a major decision at 184 pounds to creep back to within nine at 22-13 with two matches remaining and the top-ranked grappler in the Northeast ahead 7-2 late in the first period, but LeSieur quickly scored a reverse after being taken down and then secured the team victory by registering a fall at 2:32. The win proved to me even more important when the hosts captured the heavyweight bout by major decision.
The Crimson and Gray raced out to 16-9 advantage by capturing three of the first six matchups all with bonus points.
Tanner Thatcher (Blairstown, NJ) got the Engineers off to a quick start with a second period pin at 125 pounds before a pair of Masons -
Mason Medina (Orlando, FL) and
Mason Basara (Bethlehem, PA) collected back-to-back wins at 141 and 149 pounds respectively. Medina posted a fall at 3:35 and Basara notched a 12-3 major decision.
Bonus point victories was the story for WPI in the opener with Trinity. Thatcher began the day with a 10-0 shutout at 125 pounds,
Mason Basara recorded a 15-4 major decision of his own at 149, Tully was dominate in a 16-0 tech fall (5:08) at 174 and LeSieur, ranked seventh regionally at 197, tallied the first of his two opening period pins of the day.
Against the nationally-ranked Wildcats in the middle match,
Joey Baisley (Charlotte, NC) delivered a tight 10-8 triumph at 157 pounds and Tully, a three-time winner on the day, captured a 10-2 major decision at 174.
All four schools will compete a week from Sunday in the NEWA Duals hosted at Johnson & Wales. Action is slated to commence at 9:30am with seedings and bracket release scheduled to be unveiled during the week.
