Bissoondial Wins Twice as Men’s Track and Field Competes at Lyons Invitational

Norton, MA --- The WPI men's track and field team racked up seven wins and 25 individual top-five performances at the Lyons Invitational at Wheaton College on Saturday.
 
Graduate-student Avinash Bissoondial (Millbury, MA) picked up a pair of victories, while sophomore Sam Manteria (Wilbraham, MA), freshman Ethan Schnyer (Nashua, NH), junior Dylan Serreyn (Windom, MN), and junior Brinson Wyche (Corvallis, MT) also recorded individual wins.
 
Bissoondial pulled double duty today, winning both the mile and the 5000m event. In the mile, he eclipsed the field with a time of 4:18.12, while in the 5k, he went 15:08.90. His mile effort is fast enough to qualify for the New England Division III Championships.
 
Other WPI winners included Manteria take the 60m title in 7.03 seconds, Schnyer nabbing his first collegiate win in the 200m (22.93), Wyche winning the 800m in 1:58.59, and Serreyn topping the triple jump field with a 13.24m effort. Serreyn's leap hit a New England Division III Championship mark.
 
As a team, the Engineers posted 25 top five finishes. Senior Ryan Fischer (Merrimack, NH), sophomores Ajay Bellamy (Stratford, CT) and Ethan Anderson (North Haven, CT), and freshman Drew O'Reilly (Syracuse, NY) all notched a pair of top five finishes.
 
Fischer was second in the mile (4:24.20) and second in the 5k (15:38.18), while Bellamy was third in the pole vault (3.55m) and fifth in the 60m (7.17). Anderson took third in the shot put (13.85m) and fifth in the weight throw (14.83m), qualifying for postseason in the latter. Elsewhere, O'Reilly took fourth in both the mile (4.27.05) and the 5k (15:49.46).
 
Sophomore Daniel Kim (Orange, CT) also punched his ticket to postseason competition. He took second in the 60m hurdles, finishing in 8.62 seconds.
 
Three Engineers finished in the top five in the 800m, led by junior Thomas Skerry (Dedham, MA) who took third 1:59.14. Junior Everett Mosher (Chester, VT) was fourth in 1:59.77 and senior Brendan May (Rutland, MA) took fifth in 2:00.03.
 
WPI had two in the top five in both the 600m and 400m events. In the 600m, freshmen Colin Squier (Douglas, MA) was fourth in 1:30.82 while classmate Luke Holden (Carver, MA) took fifth in 1:31.08. In the 400m, sophomore Gabriel D'Amour (Somers, CT) was runner-up in a time of 52.10 and junior Anthony Minichiello (Burlington, MA) took fourth in 52.25.
 
Rounding out the individual highlights, in the high jump senior Matthew Catuccio (Trumbull, CT) nabbed a runner-up finish, going 1.85m, in the triple jump, senior Jack Adiletta (Bolton, MA) took fourth with a 12.50m effort, and in the 200m, sophomore Koray Boybeyi (Reston, VA) was fifth in 23.71.
 
In the relays, WPI's top teams took first in the 4x200m and third in the mixed 4x400m. In the 4x2, Boybeyi, graduate-student Tristan Andrew (Newtown, CT), Schnyer, and junior Alex Cole (Weymouth, MA) teamed up for a winning time of 1:33.21. In the mixed 4x4, women's runners freshman Julia Fronc (Plaistow, NH) and freshman Rayna Thompson (Brentwood, NH) joined D'Amour and Minichiello to compile a third-place time of 3:54.98.
 
The Crimson and Gray are back in Norton next weekend, taking part in the Wheaton Invitational on Saturday, beginning at 10am.
