WORCESTER --- The WPI swimming and diving team wrapped up the 12th Annual Gompei Invitational on Sunday, posting 17 top-five finishes on the final day, including wins from juniors Sean Tesoro (Reading, MA) and Nolan Schlessman (Sudbury, MA), sophomore Tom Fitzgerald (East Longmeadow, MA), and the men's 400 Yard Free Relay team.
 
The Engineers cruised to the team title, sitting atop the final overall standings with 8,752 points. Bentley University took second with 5,091 points, with Saint Peter's University in third at 4,288.5. They were followed by Sacred Heart University (3,450.5), Brandeis University (3,428), Springfield College (3,270), Central Connecticut State University (2,421.5), Merrimack College (2,384.5), Clark University (1,489), and Babson College (74) in the combined point totals.
 
Sunday opened with finals in the 1,650 Free, as five total Engineers grabbed top-10 placements. On the men's side, freshman Lucas Brown (Viera, FL) led the way in fourth place in 16:30.15, followed by senior Samuel Witscher (Portland, OR) in eighth (17:32.98), junior Daniel Cory (Reading, MA) in ninth (17:56.82), and freshman Michael Webb (Medway, MA) in 10th (17:57.60). For the women, sophomore Allie Marvell (Nashua, NH) took fifth overall, finishing the mile in 18:10.28.
 
In the final diving event of the weekend, Fitzgerald again nabbed a victory, compiling 361.05 points to top the field. freshman Aaron Lakin (Hamden, CT) was third on the board with 259.55 points.
 
The 100 Free events kicked off the evening session as freshman Mallory LaPointe (Saint Johns, FL) earned a top-10 finish for the Engineers on the women's side, touching in 55.00 for 10th overall. The men's race featured a sweep of the top three spots for WPI, led by Tesoro in first with a 46.27, followed closely by sophomore Angad Ahluwalia (Attleboro, MA) in second (46.36) and Schlessman in third (46.57). Junior Dean Doubek (Arnold, MD) added a sixth-place finish with a time of 46.87.
 
Action continued in the 200 Back, where senior Christopher Smith (Northbridge, MA) secured a third-place finish in 1:54.10. In the women's 100 IM, freshman Audrey Cook (Wakefield, MA) took ninth in 1:02.74. The men's 100 IM saw another strong block of results for the Engineers, with Schlessman earning the victory in 52.83. freshman Kuba Latawiec (Newington, CT) finished fifth (53.43), freshman Kyle Sundberg (East Northport, NY) was sixth (53.85), sophomore Tyson Elliott (Portland, OR) placed eighth (54.80), and junior Ryan Ng (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ) rounded out the top 10 with a ninth-place showing in 56.59.
 
In the women's 200 Fly, sophomore Sarah Kang (Richmond, VA) led the way with a third-place finish in 2:11.33. Lapointe added a seventh-place result in 2:14.53, and sophomore Kate Creusere (Las Cruces, NM) placed ninth in 2:15.72. The men's 200 Fly produced another trio of top-10 results, as junior Lucas Pralle (Wayland, MA) earned second in 1:57.22, followed by freshman Deion Chung (Honolulu, HI) in fourth (1:58.04) and senior Nikita Zuev (Wallingford, CT) in seventh (1:59.08).
 
The 50 Breast events closed the individual portion of the weekend, as Sundberg placed fifth in 27.04, with sophomore Nikita Ostapenko (Acton, ME) in sixth (27.39), sophomore Mohammad Eissa (Cairo, Egypt) eighth (27.64), and Elliott ninth (28.07). The women's race featured a fourth-place finish for Cook in 31.29, while sophomore Alia Ureta (Hackensack, NJ) claimed 10th in 32.23.
 
Closing out the meet with the 400 Yard Free Relay, the men's "A" squad of Tesoro, Doubek, Ahluwalia, and Schlessman delivered a winning time of 3:03.26. The "B" relay of junior Andrew Van De Water (Stratham, NH), sophomore Angelo Reade (Newburgh, NY), senior Gavin McCullough (Colorado Springs, CO), and Latawiec also scored well, finishing fourth in 3:10.57. On the women's side, the quartet of Cook, junior Katrina Waite (Falmouth, ME), Kang, and Lapointe combined for a ninth-place finish in 3:41.99.
 
The Engineers are on hiatus until Tuesday, January 13, when they host Bentley and Adelphi at the Sports & Recreation Center at 2pm.
