Thompson Paces Women’s Track and Field at Springfield’s Triangle Classic

Springfield, MA --- The WPI women's track and field team closed out the indoor regular season with strong performances at the 2025 Triangle Classic on Saturday at Springfield College.
 
Freshman Rayna Thompson (Brentwood, NH) highlighted the individual performances for the Engineers, with a pair of runner-up finishes, placing second in both the 60m dash and 200m run.
 
Thompson led the way with a second-place time of 7.99 seconds in the 60m dash, while senior Lauren Mitcheson (West Bridgewater, MA) placed sixth in 8.40 seconds. Thompson also secured second in the 200m run with a time of 26.53. In the 60m hurdles, junior Corryn Fisher (Swansea, MA) finished fourth in 9.58 seconds, with senior Olivia Spielberger (Hingham, MA) close behind in fifth at 9.73 seconds. Senior Cassie Zimmerman (East Hampton, CT) rounded out the event with an eighth-place finish in 10.38 seconds.
 
Spielberger also performed well in the triple jump, placing fifth with a personal best mark of 10.89m, while Zimmerman took sixth at 10.72m, also a PR. In the high jump, Zimmerman cleared a personal-best 1.56m for fifth place, and junior Lydia Beers (Norfolk, CT) finished ninth at 1.46m. Beers also added a sixth-place finish in the long jump with a 4.96m effort.
 
In distance events, graduate student Rachel Hurley (Peterborough, NH) claimed fifth in the 3000m run with a time of 11:11.71. Freshman Catherine Daly (Groton, MA) placed fifth in the 1000m run (3:11.06), securing a postseason qualifying standard, while sophomore Maeve Steckley (Rochester, NY) finished eighth (3:13.07).
 
Freshman Julia Fronc (Plaistow, NH) took seventh in the 400m dash with a time of 1:04.00. In field events, freshman Sydney Shilts (Flemington, NJ) placed tenth in the weight throw with a mark of 12.15m.
 
The Engineers also saw strong performances in the indoor pentathlon, with freshman Caetlyn Embree (Sherborn, CT) placing sixth with 2,444 points and classmate Emma Conway (Suffield, CT) finishing seventh with 2,413 points. Both competitors notched personal bests in each event.
 
Qualified student-athletes will compete in the New England Division III Championships next weekend. The two-day meet kicks off on Friday, February 28 at the TRACK at New Balance in Boston.
