Medford, MA --- WPI rookie
Rayna Thompson (Brentwood, NH) wasted no time making her mark on the program, as the rookie impressed in the 60m dash to highlight the action for the Engineers at the Tufts Cupid Challenge.
Thompson ran the third-best time in WPI history, going 7.89 in the morning's prelims. In the 60m final, she matched that time to finish as the runner up in the event. Thompson also nabbed a second top 10 performance in Medford, taking seventh place in the 200m with a time of 26.79.
Junior
Corryn Fisher (Swansea, MA) and senior
Cassie Zimmerman (East Hampton, CT) went fourth and fifth in the 60m hurdles final, with Fisher finishing in 9.78 and Zimmerman in 10.60. Zimmerman also took fourth in the high jump with a leap of 1.46m (4-09.50) and sixth in the triple jump with a 10.38m (34-00.75) effort. Senior
Olivia Spielberger (Hingham, MA) joined Zimmerman on the triple jump podium, taking fifth with a 10.55m (34-07.50) leap.
Junior
Sophia Reynolds (Andover, NH) also nabbed a podium finish at the event, taking third in the 5000m with a time of 19:09.18.
WPI had three student-athletes compete in the pentathlon, graduate-student
Lauren Coutu (Baldwinville, MA) and freshmen
Caetlyn Embree (Sherborn, CT) and
Emma Conway (Suffield, CT). Coutu was 10th overall with 2.497 points, including top-eight finishes in the 800m, high jump, and shot put, while Embree was 13th overall (2,302) and Conway was 14th (2,250).
Rounding out the individual highlights, sophomore
Maeve Steckley (Rochester, NY) finished 13th in the 600m with a personal-best time of 1:42.80, qualifying her for the New England Division III Championships.
In the 4x400m relay, Thompson, freshman
Julia Fronc (Plaistow, NH), senior
Lauren Mitcheson (West Bridgewater, MA), and Steckley combined for an eighth-place finish, going 4:22.89.
Up next for the Engineers, the team will compete on Saturday, February 15 at both the BU Valentine Invitational (track athletes) and MIT's Gordon Kelly Invitational (field athletes).
