North Dartmouth, MA --- The WPI men's track and field team opened the 2025 outdoor season in dominant fashion, claiming the team title at the Corsair Classic Invitational hosted by UMass Dartmouth on Saturday.
The Engineers compiled 206 points to finish well ahead of second-place UMass Dartmouth (123.5), while Springfield (93), Eastern Connecticut State (87), and Westfield State (70) rounded out the top five in the 12-team field.
Earning individual wins for the Engineers were junior
Brett Gerlach (Lock Haven, PA), sophomore
Michael Zuo (Worcester, MA), senior
Avinash Bissoondial (Millbury, MA), and sophomore
Sam Manteria (Wilbraham, MA). Gerlach captured the triple jump with a leap of 13.60m and also placed second in the high jump (1.90m). Zuo led a strong WPI contingent in the shot put with a winning throw of 14.86m, now the second-best toss in Engineers history. Bissoondial dominated the 5000m run, crossing in 14:45.47, while Manteria anchored the winning 4x100m relay team that clocked 42.08 seconds.
Manteria also posted two more scoring efforts individually, placing third in the 100m dash (11.12) and fourth in the 200m dash (22.35). He was joined on the winning relay squad by graduate-student
Tristan Andrew (Newtown, CT), sophomore
Koray Boybeyi (Reston, VA), and freshman
Ethan Schnyer (Nashua, NH). Andrew also took sixth in the 200m dash (22.41), and Schnyer added an eighth-place finish in the same event (22.51).
Senior
Ryan Fischer (Merrimack, NH) was second in the 5000m (14:56.72), while freshman
Drew O'Reilly (Syracuse, NY) placed fourth (15:26.08), graduate-student
Ben Trantanella (Westford, MA) took sixth (15:41.95), freshman
Jackson Hunt (Hopedale, MA) was seventh (15:45.69), and freshman
Jackson Sobelman (Redding, CT) earned eighth (15:51.06).
Junior
Gavin Fleck (Bend, OR) cleared 4.40m to finish second in the pole vault and ran on WPI's fifth-place 4x100m relay squad.
In javelin, WPI had three student-athletes notch New England Division III qualifying marks. Senior
Ben Furman (Groton, MA) and senior
Lucas Anthony (Lincoln, MA) placed fourth and fifth, respectively, with throws of 55.86m and 55.29m.
Michael Neff (West Hartford, CT) was seventh in the event with a 52.77m best.
Junior
Everett Mosher (Chester, VT) placed second in the 800m (1:58.54), followed by senior
Brendan May (Rutland, MA) in third (1:59.13), freshman
Alden Betterley (Bow, NH) in fifth (2:00.53), and freshman
Daniel Narvaez (Wayland, MA) in seventh (2:01.06). In the 1500m, freshman
Colin Britner (Hampton, MA) was sixth (4:09.99) and sophomore
Trip Williams (Pelham, NH) took seventh (4:10.15).
Sophomore
Daniel Kim (Orange, CT) was runner-up in the 400m hurdles (56.67) and third in the 60m hurdles (16.48), while freshman
Theo Burrell (East Haddam, CT) and freshman
Will Larsen (Chelmsford, MA) placed third (56.89) and fourth (57.08), respectively, in the 400m hurdles. Larsen added a sixth-place finish in the 60m hurdles (17.38), with freshman
Ethan Ramirez (Burlington, CT) placing seventh (17.41). Freshman
Colin Squier (Douglas, MA) earned seventh in the 400m hurdles (59.89).
In the sprints, junior
Gabriel D'Amour (Somers, CT) took third in the 400m dash (50.56), while junior
Alex Cole (Weymouth, MA) finished fourth in both the 100m (11.19) and 200m (22.30) and ran on the fifth-place 4x100m relay team. Freshman
Justin Serrecchia (Lakeville, MA) was sixth in the 100m (11.33), sophomore
Ajay Bellamy (Stratford, CT) took seventh in the 100m (11.35) and fifth in the pole vault (3.50m), and all three contributed to the fifth-place relay.
In the throws, sophomore
Ethan Anderson (North Haven, CT) had a strong day with a fifth-place finish in the shot put (13.26m) and a third-place showing in the discus (40.28m). Freshman
John Cummings (Dallas, PA) was sixth in the shot put (13.21m) and eighth in the discus (36.83m).
Senior
Jack Adiletta (Bolton, MA) rounded out the scoring for the Engineers with a sixth-place effort in the triple jump (11.75m).
The Engineers return to action next Saturday at the Springfield College Classic, with events set to begin at 11am.
