North Dartmouth, MA --- The WPI women's track and field team kicked off the 2025 outdoor campaign with a victory, capturing the team title at the Corsair Classic Invitational hosted by UMass Dartmouth on Saturday.
The Engineers racked up 112 points to edge out Springfield (102) and Eastern Connecticut State (95) in a tightly contested 14-team field. Westfield State (88) and the host Corsairs (86.5) rounded out the top five.
WPI claimed three event wins on the day. Junior
Bethany Brown (Allentown, PA) delivered a standout performance in the 400-meter hurdles, winning the event in a personal-best 1:08.37 and punching her ticket to the New England DIII Championships. Sophomore
Maeve Steckley (Rochester, NY) earned gold in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:27.13. Junior
Katy Gorden (Wayne, NJ) topped the field in the javelin, with a first-place toss of 36.16m.
Freshman
Rayna Thompson (Brentwood, NH) had a hand in three top three finishes, taking second in both the 100m (12.72) and 200m (26.47), and helping WPI to a runner-up finish in the 4x100m relay alongside junior
Corryn Fisher (Swansea, MA), senior
Lauren Mitcheson (West Bridgewater, MA), and freshman
Julia Fronc (Plaistow, NH). Mitcheson also placed second individually in the 400m dash (1:01.41), with Fronc finishing sixth in the same event (1:03.84).
WPI's distance group added valuable points with freshman
Catherine Daly (Groton, MA) taking sixth in the 1500m (5:03.31), just ahead of senior
Elie Bowman (Oakdale, CT) in eighth (5:04.55), while junior
Sophia Reynolds (Andover, NH) claimed fifth in the 5000m (18:29.16).
In the hurdles, Fisher added a second place showing in the 100-meter hurdles (17.10), while freshman
Caetlyn Embree (Sherborn, CT) was seventh (18.08). Junior
Bailey Allmon (Woodbine, MD) placed sixth in the 400m hurdles (1:13.36).
Senior
Cassie Zimmerman (East Hampton, CT) tied for second in the high jump (1.46m), and WPI earned additional field points in the pole vault with sophomore
Charly Painter (Littleton, MA) finishing fourth (2.95m) and sophomore
Drew Perry (North Andover, MA) placing sixth (2.80m). Junior
Lydia Beers (Norfolk, CT) was sixth in the long jump with a leap of 4.91m.
The Engineers posted three top eight finishes in the javelin. Besides Gorden's win, senior
Piper O'Connell (North Attleboro, MA) was fourth (34.23m), and junior
Lauren Coutu (Baldwinville, MA) took seventh (31.95m).
WPI returns to action next Saturday at the Springfield College Classic, scheduled for an 11am start.
