Amherst, MA --- Four student-athletes represented the Engineers in the decathlon and heptathlon at the two-day UMass Amherst Multi Meet, with first-years
Ethan Ramirez (Burlington, CT),
Caetlyn Embree (Sherborn, CT), and
Emma Conway (Suffield, CT) making their collegiate multi-event debuts, and junior
Lauren Coutu (Baldwinville, MA) leading the women's squad.
In the decathlon, Ramirez totaled 5,505 points to finish seventh overall and second among NCAA Division III competitors. His performance was highlighted by a second-place finish in the 100-meter dash (11.45), a third-place showing in the discus (33.14m), and a fifth-place mark in the shot put (10.60m). He also clocked 4:56.46 in the 1500 meters (6th), and added solid marks across the board in the long jump (6.05m), javelin (36.28m), high jump (1.65m), 400m (54.04), 110m hurdles (16.95), and pole vault (3.00m). UMass Amherst's Jacob Brown won the event with 6,578 points.
On the women's side, Coutu led the Crimson and Gray in the heptathlon, finishing 12th overall with 3,286 points. Her top mark came in the javelin with a 33.02-meter throw to place second. Coutu also cleared 1.36 meters in the high jump (7th), threw 8.90 meters in the shot put (10th), and ran 2:40.63 in the 800 meters (13th). She added a time of 18.55 in the 100-meter hurdles (15th), clocked 30.13 in the 200 meters (14th), and leapt 4.19 meters in the long jump (14th).
Embree placed 13th with 3,250 points in her collegiate debut. Embree finished seventh in the 800 meters (2:36.26) and earned top-10 placements in the 100-meter hurdles (17.04, 9th) and 200 meters (28.76, 10th). She also registered marks of 4.55 meters in the long jump (11th), 1.33 meters in the high jump (13th), 6.52 meters in the shot put (15th), and 20.43 meters in the javelin (15th).
Fellow classmate Conway finished 14th with 3,094 points. Conway placed eighth in the 800 meters (2:37.30), 10th in the javelin (23.96m), and 11th in the shot put (8.84m). She also turned in a time of 17.86 in the 100-meter hurdles (12th), cleared 1.30 meters in the high jump (14th), ran 30.29 in the 200 meters (15th), and jumped 3.96 meters in the long jump (15th).
UMass Amherst's Tesaira Williams won the heptathlon with a final score of 4,588 points.
The Engineers will continue their busy weekend at several meets, including the Conn College Silfen Elite Distance Meet on Friday night at 8:25pm, the Duke Invitational on Friday at 1pm, and a return trip to UMass for the Commonwealth Invitational on Sunday at 10am.
