WORCESTER -- Racing on its home course Saturday morning, WPI Women's Rowing placed all three of its top boats in grand finals during a competitive regatta that featured seven of the top 15 crews in the nation on Lake Quinsigamond. The event was connected regatta with Clark that featured a heats/finals progression.
In the Varsity Eight, WPI, ranked ninth in the latest Pocock CRCA Poll Top 15, landed in fourth place in the Grand Final with a strong showing of 6:59.11, outpacing No.8 Wellesley (7:07.04) and holding pace with fifth-ranked Bates (6:43.40), No. 4 Trinity (6:47.76), and No. 12 William Smith (6:56.23). The Engineers advanced after placing third in their morning heat at 7:03.82 and clocking a time quicker than No. 14 Hamilton and No. 15 Clark.
The Second Varsity Eight turned in the Engineers' top finish of the day, placing fourth in the Grand Final. After earning a spot with a runner-up time of 7:08.09 in the heats, WPI clocked a 7:13.16 in the final—just behind William Smith (7:09.11) and ahead of Wellesley (7:22.68), as Trinity (6:55.40) and Bates (7:01.49) took the top two spots.
The Third Varsity Eight also reached the Grand Final and came away with a fifth-place finish. WPI posted a time of 7:34.30, rounding out a competitive field behind Bates (7:12.50), Trinity (7:14.57), Wellesley (7:28.37), and William Smith (7:29.30). The Engineers had qualified by finishing third in their morning heat.
WPI returns to the water of Lake Quinsigamond on Saturday, competing against Connecticut College, (RV) Colby and No. 5 Trinity beginning around 9am.
