WORCESTER -- On a cloudy and chilly Saturday morning, the nationally-ranked WPI women's rowing varsity eight kicked off its spring portion of the schedule by competing for the Jennifer McLaughlin Cup and against three ranked programs in racing on Lake Quinsigamond.
The varsity eight had several interesting subplots Saturday. Wesleyan, ranked second in the most recent Pocock CRCA Poll Top 15, captured their second straight McLaughlin Cup and third in five tries over No. 9 WPI. The Cardinals, which finished second at last year's NCAA Championships turned in a time of 7:14.30 while the Engineers reached the finish line in 7:27.93. All was not lost for the Crimson and Gray as WPI was quicker than seventh-ranked Smith (7:28.58), a boat selected ahead of the defending champion Engineers in the NEWMAC preseason poll and No. 15 Colby (7:38.11).
Wesleyan also won the second varsity eight while Smith was victorious in the 3V. The Cardinals 2V (7:21.21) was 10 seconds faster than second place Smith (7:31.17) while WPI (7:39.45) was third and Colby (8:17.55) fourth. The Pioneers third varsity eight clocked a time of 7:47.80 followed by Wesleyan (7:57.58), WPI (8:01.11) and Smith B (8:11.23).
WPI women's rowing returns to the water next Saturday, entertaining (RV) Clark, Conn College, Simmons, and No. 3 Williams that features the Barbara Donahue Cup.
