Men’s Rowing Deals with Windy Conditions on Lake Quinsigamond in New England Championships

Second Varsity Eight
WORCESTER -- Weather played havoc once again on Lake Quinsigamond on Saturday as WPI men's rowing competed in the New England Championships.  While all morning races were completed, only the varsity eight was able to get back on the water for finals before high winds caused the cancellation of the rest of the regatta.

Regatta organizers adjusted the racing schedule on Friday based on the forecast with the varsity boats rowing first followed by the lower boats.  The varsity eight, ranked eighth in the latest IRCA/IRA Division III Top 15, placed third in its morning heat in a time of 6:29.265.  Fifth-ranked Bates edged No. 2 Williams by just over a second (6:08.573 to 6:09.729) while Division I Boston College was fourth (6:38.237) and Mass Maritime fifth (7:09.729).

Coming back in the afternoon for the final, the Engineers placed second in the petite final, reaching Regatta Point in a time of 7:57.030, seven seconds behind Coast Guard (7:50.130).  Colby was third (8:24.079), nearly a half minute behind WPI while Middlebury (8:35.174) was fourth, BC fifth (8:49.231) and Bowdoin sixth (9:02.727).

The second and third varsity eights were only able to row in the morning.  The second varsity turned in a time of 6:44.611 to place third in Heat 2, behind Williams (6:31.612) and Bates (6:36.480) and ahead of Bowdoin (7:28.753).  The 3V finished fourth in its heat, with a time of 7:19.205, just over a second behind Division I MIT (7:17.991).  Williams posted the best morning time of 6:57.81 while Tufts was second (7:12.739) and Coast Guard fifth (7:44.412).

Due to the conditions, the fourth varsity eight and the second varsity four, which were slated for finals racing only, were cancelled.

The Engineers are back on the water next Sunday, May 11th, competing in the National Invitational Rowing Championships on Lake Quinsigamond.
