WORCESTER -- In a spring season that had already seen the cancellation of two of six regattas prior to Saturday, WPI women's rowing again dealt with wind and weather on Lake Quinsigamond, this time in the New England Championships. While all morning races were completed, only the varsity eight was able to get back on the water for finals before high winds caused the cancellation of the rest of the regatta.
Regatta organizers adjusted the racing schedule on Friday based on the forecast with the varsity boats rowing first followed by the lower boats. WPI, ranked tenth in the most recent Pocock CRCA Top 15, saw its varsity eight log a pair of fourth place finishes. The Engineers completed the 2000 meter course in a time of 7:18.709 in its morning heat, with top-ranked Bates capturing the race with a time of 7:03.123. Trinity (7:05.089) was second and Bowdoin (7:14.575) third, while Clark (7:26.273) placed fifth and Simmons sixth (9:04.164).
As the afternoon rowing began, it was apparent that conditions had deteriorated significantly and the women's varsity eight was the final race contested before the rest of the regatta was cancelled. Most crews posted times a minute and a half slower than the heats with WPI clocking a 8:40.557 in the petite final. Smith (8:21.482) captured the race followed by Bowdoin (8:31.713) and Middlebury (8:48.057) followed by Coast Guard (9:11.303).
The second and third varsity eights were only able to row in the morning. The second varsity turned in a time of 7:35.406to place third in Heat 3, behind Bates (7:19.230) and Wesleyan (7:20.700) and ahead of Coast Guard (7:39.220) and Conn College (8:10.377). The 3V finished fourth in its heat, with a time of 8:34.859. Tufts reached Regatta Point first () followed by Trinity (8:12.499) and Smith (8:14.875).
WPI turns its attention to next week's National Invitational Rowing Championships, which is Sunday, May 11th on Lake Quinsigamond.
