Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Worth the Wait! Field Hockey Blanks Roger Williams as Lakin and Barton Register Career Firsts

Bristol, RI --- Sophomores Myles Lakin (Reading, MA) and Emma Barton (Hopewell Junction, NY) recorded career-firsts as Lakin posted his first career victory in between the pipes and Barton registered her first goal for the Engineers in a 2-0 season-opening victory over Roger Williams at Bayside Field.

The game was initially scheduled for a 6pm start but was delayed due to a weather delay in a previous contest at Roger Williams that resulted in a 7:30pm start. WPI (1-0) clinched its first season-opening win in the Kim Cosenza era as the Hawks drop to 0-1.

Barton and graduate student Lauren Meinhold (Boxboro, MA) paced the way in scoring as Barton cleaned up a tip that hit off the post by Abbey Powers (Halifax, MA). Meinhold reverse chipped a ball across the circle as Powers redirected to the backside of the goal hitting off the far side post, giving Barton a tap-in goal at 25:33.

After three consecutive penalty corners for the Engineers, Barton connected with Meinhold who pulled to her left and ripped a ball into the circle as a defender deflected the ball past the Roger Williams goalkeeper to extend the lead to two halfway through the third quarter.

The hosting Hawks held a 10-4 advantage over the Crimson and Gray throughout the first three quarters and continued to push with a 10-0 advantage in the fourth quarter.

Overall, five different Engineers accounted for the five shots on goal for the night as Roger Williams' Chelsea King (Albany, NY) registered a game-high six shots on frame.

Larkin was brilliant in net for the Engineers, posting 12 saves,   For the game, Roger Williams outshot the guests 16-8 and enjoyed an 20-4 edge in penalty corners, including a 6-0 advantage in the second period and 10-0 in the fourth quarter.  Hannah Brazil (Sandwich, MA) was credited with a pair of saves for the Hawks.

Both teams return to the field on Sunday.  WPI plays the middle contest of a three-game season-opening road when its heads north to face the University of New England at 1pm while continues a run of home matches to start the season with an 11am affair with Lasell.
