First and Third Quarter Scoring Barrages Sends Field Hockey Over Worcester State

WORCESTER --- Abbey Powers (Halifax, MA) scored twice and Emma Barton (Hopewell Junction, NY) doled out a pair of assists to lift WPI to a 6-0 shutout over crosstown rival Worcester State in a non-conference field hockey contest played late Tuesday afternoon on H. Carr Field at Alumni Stadium.

WPI, which had alternated wins and losses over its last five outings, ups its record to 4-2 on the young season while the Lancers dip to 0-6 overall.

The Engineers dented the scoring column on three of their first shots of the game, including the first two.  Arie Lang (West Hartford, CT) got the scoring started when she stole the ball from a defender and shot into bottom left corner for her first goal of 2025 just 3:24 into the matchup.   Lauren Meinhold (Boxboro, MA) doubled the advantage nearly five minutes later when she rocketed home an insertion off a penalty corner insertion by Barton before sophomore Kyra Duane (Marlboro, MA) closed out the first quarter scoring spree with her first college goal following an insertion from Leah Uglevich (Marlboro, MA) at 11:12.

The second quarter was scoreless with hosts attempting eight of the frame's nine shots, however it was the Lancers with the best scoring chance of the quarter when Katelynn Swistak (West Brookfield, MA) made a nifty move to get free but her shot was repelled by a diving save by Myles Lakin (Reading, MA) with 3:48 to go before the intermission.

WPI netted three more tallies in the third quarter.  Madeline Chase (Danvers, MA) got the spurt started when she found the back of the net on an unassisted marker 3:12 into the stanza.  Powers took centerstage the rest of the way, knocking home goals six minutes apart late in the quarter with Lauren Coutu (Danvers, MA) earning the assist on the fifth marker and Barton on the sixth goal.

Lakin earned the team's third clean sheet of the season in net, making a pair of stops on the afternoon while Worcester State goalkeeper Lizzy MacDonald (Medford, MA) was called on to make five saves.  Swistak accounted for two of the Lancers three shots in the game, with Allison Keenan (Marlboro, MA) picking up the third.  Meinhold packed all players with a game-best five shots.

Both teams begin conference play with road contests on Saturday.  WPI doesn't have far to go, venturing down Park Ave. to square off with Clark at 1pm while Worcester State heads to Westfield State for a 11am tilt.
