WORCESTER -- The WPI field hockey team opened NEWMAC play by handing previously unbeaten Clark its first setback of the season with a 3-0 victory Saturday afternoon at Granger Field. The Engineers' third shutout of the year improved the team to 5-2 (1-0 NEWMAC), while the Cougars dip to 6-1 (0-1 NEWMAC).

Abbey Powers (Halifax, MA),
Lauren Meinhold (Boxboro, MA) and
Leah Uglevich (Maynard, MA) all registered goals for WPI. In goal,
Myles Lakin (Reading, MA) authored a three-save shutout.

Powers opened the scoring at 14:09, cashing in on a shot from the right site the beat the goalie to the left side after a stretch of sustained circle pressure and three straight corners. After halftime, Meinhold made it 2-0 at 37:33, hammering home from backhand from the left corner then went into the top right corner following another attacking barrage. Uglevich capped the day at 59:13 on a feed from the right side of the circle by sophomore forward
Arie Lang (West Hartford, CT) to set the final margin.

The Engineers outshot the Cougars 18-8, including an 11-3 edge in shots on goal, and finished with a 6-3 advantage in penalty corners.
Eve Martineau (Greene, ME) paced the WPI attack with four shots, Uglevich, Powers, and Meinhold added three each.

Clark split time in goal between
Rachel Reiter (Millburn, NJ) and
Loren Root (Sherborn, MA), who combined for eight saves.
Elizabeth Cacciapaglia (Ridgefield, CT) and
Morgan Brown (Homer, NY) and
Alison Kopec (Redding, CT) each fired multiple shots for the hosts.
Up next, WPI hosts Trinity at 7pm on Wednesday, September 24. Clark returns home to face the University of Hartford on Tuesday, September 23 at 7pm.
