Colorado Springs, CO — WPI Field Hockey goalkeeper Myles Lakin (Reading, MA) has been named the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III Defensive Player of the Week, adding to Lakin's recognition earlier this week as the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Field Hockey Defensive Athlete of the Weekon Tuesday.
Lakin anchored the Engineers' backline during an undefeated opening weekend, posting back-to-back shutouts on the road as the sophomore goalie tallied 14 saves across two contests, highlighted by a seven-save performance in Friday's 2-0 victory at Roger Williams in which five stops came during a first-quarter surge by the Hawks. Two days later, Lakin matched that effort with another seven saves, including stops on key penalty corners to preserve a 1-0 decision at the University of New England.
The sophomore finished the week with a perfect 1.000 save percentage while not conceding a goal, helping WPI to its first 2-0 start since 2018. This honors mark Lakin's first career national recognition from the NFHCA and first NEWMAC weekly accolade and is also the Engineers' first NFHCA weekly award winner since 2019.
Lakin shares the NFHCA spotlight with Babson sophomore Penny Baroni, who was named the Division III Offensive Player of the Week and NEWMAC Offensive Player of the Week after tallying nine points in the Beavers' 2-0 weekend.
WPI (2-0) continues its early-season road swing on Wednesday, September 3rd, visiting Wesleyan for a non-conference matchup at 6:30pm.
