Waltham, MA --- Paced by three individual event victories, the WPI men's indoor track and field team opened the 2026 season by capturing the team title at Brandeis' Reggie Poyau Memorial Invitational on Saturday.
WPI finished atop the team standings with 170.5 points, outpacing UMass Dartmouth (123.5) and host Brandeis (83) in the seven-team field. Colby (81), Bentley (39), Wheaton (29), and Western Connecticut State rounded out the scoring.
The Engineers' day was highlighted by wins from senior
Alex Cole (Weymouth, MA), junior
Daniel Kim (Orange, CT), and junior
Ethan Anderson (North Haven, CT).
Cole opened the meet with WPI's first victory of the day, winning the 60 meters in a personal-best 6.98. Sophomore
Justin Serrecchia (Lakeville, MA) followed with a third-place, personal-best finish in 7.08, while junior
Ajay Bellamy (Hamden, CT) added a seventh-place effort at 7.21.
Kim continued WPI's success on the track with a win in the 60-meter hurdles, crossing the line in a personal-best 8.52. The Engineers placed four athletes in the scoring positions, as freshman
Aloiye Okhipo (Milford, MA) finished third in 8.71, sophomore
Will Fairfax (Dartmouth, MA) took fifth in 8.76, and freshman
Brian Stampoulos (Hillsboro, NJ) placed seventh in 8.89.
In the 300 meters, sophomore
Will Kelley (Medford, MA) led WPI with a third-place finish in 36.85. Senior
Anthony Minichiello (Burlington, MA) recorded a personal-best time of 36.99 to place fifth, while Kim added a seventh-place finish in 37.34. Junior
Gabriel D'Amour (Somers, CT) and graduate student
Josh Castro (Pittsburgh, PA) also turned in a personal bests in the event, with D'Amour running 37.69 and Castro finishing in 37.94.
Stampoulos paced the Engineers in the 500 meters, finishing fifth with a time of 1:07.56. Sophomore
Jurjen Bouvier (Longmeadow, MA) followed closely in sixth at 1:08.02, and sophomore
Will Larsen (Chelmsford, MA) placed seventh in 1:08.09.
WPI controlled the middle distances in the 1000 meters, where senior
Everett Mosher (Chester, VT) claimed the event title in 2:29.58. Senior
Brinson Wyche (Corvallis, MT) finished runner-up with a personal-best time of 2:31.64, and senior
Thomas Skerry (Dedham, MA) added a fourth-place, personal-best effort in 2:34.31. Additional scoring performances came from sophomore
Colin Britner (Hampton, CT) in sixth, sophomore
Alden Betterley (Bow, NH) in seventh, and sophomore
Daniel Narvaez (Wayland, MA) in eighth.
In the mile, freshman
Matthew Meerdink (Ballston Spa, NY) earned WPI's third victory of the day, winning the event in 4:32.24. Senior
Nathan Barry (Newburyport, MA) added a third-place finish with a time of 4:36.10.
The Engineers also picked up key points in the 3000 meters, led by sophomore
Jackson Sobelman (Redding, CT), who placed fourth with a personal-best time of 8:49.82. Sophomore
Drew O'Reilly (Syracuse, NY) finished sixth, while freshman
Giuseppe Villani (Shrewsbury, MA) rounded out the scoring in eighth.
In the field events, senior
Brett Gerlach (Lock Haven, PA) led WPI with a fourth-place finish in the high jump after clearing 1.87 meters and added another fourth-place effort in the long jump with a mark of 6.19 meters. Okhipo also scored in the high jump, placing seventh at 1.72 meters, while Bellamy finished fifth in the long jump.
The throws were anchored by Anderson, who captured the shot put title with a mark of 16.68 meters and placed second in the weight throw with a personal-best throw of 15.31 meters. Junior
Michael Zuo (Worcester, MA) contributed with a personal-best 13.19 meters to place fourth in the weight throw and added a runner-up finish in the shot put at 14.80 meters. Sophomore
John Cummings (Dallas, PA) placed third in the shot put, while freshman
Logan Lavimodiere (Cranston, RI) and freshman
Abdulrahman Muayad (Yarmouth, ME) finished seventh and eighth, respectively.
WPI will return to action on Friday, Jan. 23, at 5:00pm at The Lyons Invitational, hosted by Wheaton.
