The WPI Department of Athletics is proud to continue its 2025–2026 Athletics Celebration, a daily series highlighting the top moments from each varsity program's season. The celebration also recognizes each team's Ray Cherenzia '73 Award honoree and selected programs' major award winners, as chosen by WPI Athletics' head coaches.

Men's Top Moment: Fleck Earns Fourth Career All-America Honor
Gavin Fleck closed a distinguished WPI career on May 23 at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in La Crosse, Wisconsin. The senior cleared 4.75 meters on the first attempt and 4.90 meters on the second, finishing tied for 14th nationally in the pole vault and earning USTFCCCA Second Team All-America recognition.
The performance marked Fleck's fourth career All-America citation. Fleck previously placed seventh at the 2024 indoor national championships, ninth at the 2024 outdoor championships and eighth at the 2026 indoor championships. The final national appearance capped a season in which the Engineers finished second at the NEWMAC Championship and captured the New England Division III outdoor team championship.

Women's Top Moment: Eight All-New England Performances
The WPI women delivered eight All-New England performances and placed ninth with 31 points at the New England Division III Championships on May 2 in Springfield. Rayna Thompson placed third in the 400 meters, Vivienne Evans finished fifth in the 100 meters and Bethany Brown recorded a personal-best third-place showing in the 400-meter hurdles.
Catherine Daly added a fifth-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Addison Pong placed eighth in the shot put and the 4x400-meter relay of Julia Fronc, Sabrina Cady, Bailey Allmon and Brown finished fifth. Caetlyn Embree and Lauren Coutu completed the eight-honor performance with personal-best fifth- and seventh-place totals in the heptathlon.

Ray Cherenzia '73 Award Recipient – Men's Track & Field: John Cummings
John Cummings was selected as the men's track and field program's recipient of the Ray Cherenzia '73 Award. The honor is presented to a member of each varsity team who exemplifies the spirit of an "unsung hero"—someone who works hard every day, puts the team first over personal goals and performs the often-unrecognized responsibilities that are vital to the team's success.
Cummings' selection recognizes the daily commitment, selflessness and character brought to the Crimson and Gray while representing WPI in competition, in the classroom and in the community.
 

Ray Cherenzia '73 Award Recipient – Women's Track & Field: Corryn Fisher
Corryn Fisher was selected as the women's track and field program's recipient of the Ray Cherenzia '73 Award. The recognition celebrates a team-first contributor whose preparation, dependability and willingness to handle the little things strengthen the program, often without widespread recognition.
Fisher's selection reflects the hard work, sportsmanship and dignified representation expected of a Cherenzia Award honoree across competition, academics and the WPI community.
 

Major Award Winners

The Merl Norcross Award – Gavin Fleck
Presented to the best senior athlete from a men's team who exemplifies the high standards expressed in "The WPI Athlete" over a career at WPI. The WPI Athlete is someone who, through hard work, high character and a positive attitude, achieves success above and beyond ability while representing the University with distinction.
Fleck developed into the conference and region's premier pole vaulter and one of the nation's best. The three-time All-American entering the outdoor championship added a fourth national honor in the final meet of the season. A two-time New England and NEWMAC champion, seven-time All-New England honoree and three-time All-NEWMAC performer, Fleck owns WPI's indoor and outdoor pole vault records.
 

The Leo S. Jansson-Percy Carpenter Award – Will Larsen
Presented to the outstanding male athlete in the sophomore class.
Larsen established the WPI record in the 400-meter hurdles and earned All-NEWMAC recognition with a runner-up performance at the conference championship, the second All-NEWMAC citation of the sophomore's career. Larsen went on to earn All-New England distinction and ranked among the top performers in the region.
 

The Melvin G. Massucco Award – Alex Cole
Presented to the male senior athlete in recognition of achievements, contributions, character, leadership, sportsmanship and promotion of school spirit at WPI.
A track and field captain, Cole owns WPI records in the 60 meters, 100 meters and 4x100-meter relay. Cole successfully defended the NEWMAC 100-meter title, placed second in the 200 meters and 4x100 relay, and was named the conference Track Athlete of the Meet. The two-time Second Team All-American also earned All-New England honors in the 60, 100, 200 and 4x100 during the year.
 

Additional Season Honors
Indoor Season
The men won the Reggie Poyau Memorial Invitational and Wheaton's Lyons Invitational, with Cole lowering the school 60-meter record twice at Wheaton. Across the indoor postseason, WPI produced conference-leading marks, a fifth-place New England team finish, eight USTFCCCA All-Region honors and two NCAA All-America performances from Fleck and Everett Mosher. Fleck was also selected as the USTFCCCA Northeast Region Men's Field Athlete of the Year.

Outdoor Season
The Engineers carried their momentum outdoors. The men and women combined for 13 event victories at the Corsair Classic, Larsen and Cole set school records at Springfield, and the men's 4x100 relay repeated as NEWMAC weekly honorees. WPI's women placed fourth at the NEWMAC Championship, highlighted by Pong's shot put crown, while the men finished second behind victories from Cole, Matthew Anderson and Jacob Ramirez.

One week later, the men captured the New England Division III championship and the women placed ninth with eight All-New England performances. WPI later collected 24 USTFCCCA outdoor All-Region honors. At the NCAA Championships, Mosher earned Second Team All-America recognition in the 1,500 meters and received the NCAA Elite 90 Award, Cole earned a second career All-America citation in the 100 meters and Fleck completed the meet with a fourth career All-America honor.

Sportsmanship and Academic Recognition
WPI's season-long excellence extended beyond competition. Track and field was represented on the NEWMAC Spring All-Sportsmanship Team, 17 women and 27 men earned NEWMAC Academic All-Conference recognition, and six student-athletes from each combined track and field/cross country program were selected to the CSC Academic All-District teams. Mosher added CSC Academic All-America honors and was later named the NEWMAC Student-Athlete of the Year. Both teams received USTFCCCA Team All-Academic recognition, with seven Engineers earning individual accolades.
