Promoted-Taylor Browning-WPI Track & Field-2026

Taylor Browning Elevated to Full-Time Assistant Track & Field Coach and Strength Coach at WPI

Taylor Browning - WPI Track & Field Assistant Coach
WORCESTER -- WPI Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Brian Chabot and Head Track & Field Coach Emily Dippel have announced the elevation of Taylor Browning to a full-time role as Assistant Track & Field Coach.  He will also continue to work with the department in the area of strength and conditioning.

Browning joined the WPI coaching staff prior to the 2024-25 academic year as the Engineers' sprints, hurdles and relays coach. In just two seasons on Boynton Hill, he has helped guide the program through one of the most successful stretches in school history while establishing himself as one of the top young coaches in NCAA Division III.

"We're excited to bring Taylor on full time," said Chabot. "In his first two years with our track & field program, his sprinters have enjoyed unprecedented success, and we're looking forward to seeing that continue."

"We're grateful for the administration's belief in and support of not only our program, but WPI Athletics as a whole with Taylor's promotion to full-time status. We saw firsthand how he contributed to softball's fantastic season this past spring, and now even more of our teams will benefit from his expertise in developing speed and power."

Browning's impact on the Engineers has been immediate. During his first two years, WPI captured the 2025 NEWMAC Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championship and the 2026 NCAA Division III New England Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championship, marking just the second conference championship and second regional championship in program history.

Under Browning's guidance, WPI sprinters have established four school records in the 60 meters, 100 meters, 400-meter hurdles and 4x100-meter relay while producing numerous top-10 performances in program history. His athletes have also claimed three New England individual and relay championships, highlighted by the Engineers' 4x100-meter relay title in 2025 and Sam Manteria (Wilbraham, MA) capturing New England crowns in both the 100 meters and 200 meters in 2026.

Browning coached Alex Cole (Weymouth, MA) to NEWMAC Men's Track Athlete of the Year honors in 2026 after Cole established both the WPI school record and NEWMAC Championship meet record in the 100 meters with a time of 10.41 seconds before earning NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field second team All-America honors. Browning also guided Cole, Manteria, Ethan Schnyer (Nashua, NH) and Tristan Andrew (Newtown, CT) to second team All-America honors in the 4x100-meter relay at the 2025 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

"Taylor brings an intentional, data-driven approach to coaching that perfectly complements the curiosity and analytical mindset of WPI students," stated Dippel.  "I have been impressed with the way that Taylor has invested in our student athletes. He has created an environment where they feel challenged, supported and empowered to reach their full potential. His passion for developing people, combined with his commitment to excellence, will continue to elevate the experience of every student-athlete he works with."

Earlier this year, Browning's accomplishments were recognized nationally when he was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Northeast Region Men's Outdoor Track Assistant Coach of the Year.

In addition to his responsibilities with the track & field program, Browning has collaborated with several WPI athletic programs on speed and power development, including helping support the Engineers' softball program during its historic 2026 season. His expanded full-time role will allow him to continue enhancing the performance of WPI student-athletes across multiple sports while overseeing the Engineers' sprinters, hurdlers and relay athletes.

"Before arriving at WPI, I didn't fully appreciate the unique type of discipline and intellect that defines its student-athletes," remarked Browning.  "I've found that my numbers-driven, analytical approach to coaching has resonated particularly well in this environment, and I'm thrilled I now get to help them even more in this full-time role."

Before arriving on Boynton Hill, Browning served as an assistant coach at Piedmont University following a two-year stint as a graduate assistant at Augusta University. Across those stops, he coached the sprints, hurdles and jumps while mentoring conference champions, NCAA qualifiers, All-Region performers and All-Americans.

In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Browning has worked as a private streth and conditioning coach since 2020 and recently earned his Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology from Springfield College. A Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and a holder of a Sprint, Hurdle, & Relay Event Specialist Certification through the USTFCCCA, Browning combines an evidence-based approach to performance with extensive experience in athlete development.

As a student-athlete at the University of Redlands, Browning was a four-time NCAA Division III national qualifier, 4x100-meter relay All-American, seven-time All-Conference selection and three-time conference champion. He earned a bachelor's degree in biology with a minor in physical education and athletics before completing a master's degree in kinesiology at Augusta University.
