Gavin McCullough-WPI Men's Swimming & Diving-2025-2026

Men’s Swimming and Diving Opens Strong in First day of Menck Invitational

Gavin McCullough
Bristol, RI --- The Engineers of WPI took an afternoon trip down to Roger Williams to contest the first of a back-to-back against the Hawks. The meet, formerly known as Tech Sprints, has expanded to a two-day event and has been rebranded as the Menck Invitational, in honor of Bob Menck. Menck was a swimming official who, in addition to his services as a 2021 Olympic Trials official, had been a staple on deck at WPI, officiating both college dual meets as well as numerous conference championships.

Action resumes tomorrow at 11:00 am in Worcester as WPI will recognize their seniors in a pre-meet celebration.

Roger Williams started the meet off with a senior recognition, highlighting the achievements of Luke Austin, Will Bonvissuto, and Daryl Kyabayinze. Much like the women, the Hawks of RWU parlayed that success into an event win in the 400 free relay as their team touched in 3:21.23, little more than a second ahead of the team of Angad Ahluwalia (Attleboro, MA), Nolan Schlessman (Sudbury, MA), Dean Doubek (Arnold, MA) and Sean Tesoro (Reading, MA).

The Engineers didn't claim as many top seeds as the women's side did, but they put themselves into very strong positions tomorrow to wrestle away the win. Christopher Smith (Northbridge, MA) tried his hand at the 100 breaststroke. Primarily a butterfly/backstroker, Smith posted the school's top time with his second place finish of 1:01.15. Breaststroker Kyle Sundberg (East Northport, NY) seemingly swapped events with Smith as the first-year took on the 100 back, where his 56.05 was good for fourth overall.

WPI did secure itself some middle lanes tomorrow as Gavin McCullough (Colorado Springs, CO) posted the fastest time in the 500 and the lone sub-5:00 minute time in the field with his 4:57.26. A senior, McCullough also posted the 2nd fastest time in the 200 free.

Joining McCullough as a top seed tomorrow was Doubek who hit the wall first in the 50 freestyle, courtesy of his 22.06. Doubek also tasted victory in the last event, the 400 medley relay as he along with Sundberg, Smith and Tesoro ended the meet with a victory in the afternoon's only other relay and only other final, the 400 Medley. The quartet posted a time of 3:35.06.
