Charlie Pavis (Bethlehem, PA) and 197-pounder
Joseph Bernard (Stratham, NH) each went undefeated in three bouts Saturday as WPI won two of three matches in a home wrestling quad inside the WPI Sports & Recreation Center. The Engineers opened the day by rolling over New England College, 41-8, then fell to Southern Maine, 25-19, in the middle match before defeating Brockport, 22-22, to conclude the day.
Both Brockport and Southern Maine also finished 2-1 with the Eagles knocking off USM, 40-10, and besting New England College, 51-5 while Southern Maine vanquished NEC 42-9. After Saturday's action, WPI is 8-7 on the season, Brockport 4-2, Southern Maine 4-9 and New England 1-14.
Pavis and
Joel Puri (Milford, MA) put WPI ahead right out of the gate in the opener as Pavis collected a pin just 53 seconds in at 125 pounds and Puri has his hand raised after a forfeit a 133 pounds to put the Crimson and Gray ahead 12-0. After NEC got on the board with a major decision at 141 pounds, it was for more wins for the Engineers as
Mason Basara (Bethlehem, PA) began the run at 149 with a 16-1 tech fall at 2:34 before
Lucas Marchese (Branchburg, NJ) and
Joey Baisley (Charlotte, NC) delivered back-to-back decisions at 157 (8-2) and 165 (5-4).
Following a Pilgram victory at 174 pounds, WPI closed out the win with three straight first period pins.
Joseph Tully (Carver, MA) kicked off the pin parade at 184 with a fall at 1:24. Bernard then added a pin just 1:02 in his match at 197 before heavyweight
Trevor Bowen (Frenchtown, NJ) closed out the 40-8 team win with a pin at 1:29.
Pavis, the fifth ranked 125-pound grappler from Region 1, started the middle match with Southern Maine with his second straight first period fall (1:51) to propel the Boynton Hillers to a quick 6-0 edge but the Huskies cobbled together five straight victories - three by regionally-ranked wrestlers - to surge ahead 22-6.
Theo Sawyers (Boston, MA) got WPI back on track with a 12-4 major decision at 174 pounds and then Tully, ranked fourth in Region 1 at 184, quickly gave the host six points with a fall just 23 seconds in. Bernard pulled the Engineers to within three points at 22-19 with at 14-8 decision only to see USM heavyweight
Jason Canavan (Keene, NH) produce a tight 3-2 victory to give the Huskies a 25-19 triumph.
The final matchup of the day with the Eagles saw WPI jump out to a 15-0 bulge as Pavis was an 11-6 victor at 125 pounds over the second-ranked wrestler from Region 2 before Peri registered a fall at 1:25 and
Mason Medina (Orlando, FL) a pin at 4:38. It was Brockport then next recorded three consecutive wins (Dec, Pin, Tech Fall) to close within a point with four bouts to go before Sawyers
gave WPI a much needed 15-3 major decision at 174. After a Brockport win in a matchup of regionally-ranked grapplers at 184, Bernard grinded out a 9-7 triumph at 197 to put the Engineers ahead 22-17 with just one bout left. The host needed avoid a disaster at 285 pounds as Brockport's 3-2 win at heavyweight was not able to flip the team result and WPI won 22-20.
After a weekend off next week, the Engineers return for a busy stretch of events beginning on Friday, February 13th, traveling to Springfield for a 6pm tri-match versus Western New England. The three other programs are back on the mat next Saturday, February 7th. New England College is at Rhode Island College for a dual meet, Southern Maine hosts a home quad and Brockport is at Castleton for a quad.
