No. 7 Babson Hands Field Hockey 4-0 Setback; Lakin Records Season-Best 13 Saves for Engineers

WORCESTER -- No. 7 Babson scored twice in the opening quarter and added two more goals before the start of the fourth, handing WPI a 4-0 setback Saturday afternoon at H. Carr Field.

The Engineers slip to 5-6 overall and 3-1 in NEWMAC play, while the Beavers improve to 7-3 overall and remain perfect at 3-0 in conference action.

Babson controlled the opening 15 minutes, putting 11 shots toward the WPI cage and earning six penalty corners. Myles Lakin (Reading, MA) turned aside early attempts by Molly DiGiulio (East Amherst, NY), Lauren Golden (New Albany, OH) and Helen DiGiovanni (Harwich, MA) before the Beavers broke through at 8:29. Julia Krepelka (Arlington, MA) scored her first goal of the season off a penalty corner, with Golden providing the assist. Golden doubled the advantage just 90 seconds later, finishing a feed from DiGiovanni.

The Beavers continued to pressure in the second quarter, with Lakin making three more saves before Kate Schneider (Walpole, MA) converted a pass from Emma Smith (Kenilworth, IL) at 28:23. Lakin denied Schneider, Taylor Shoflick (Greenwood Village, CO) and Golden during the period, keeping WPI within three entering halftime.

Babson added its fourth goal just 2:35 into the third quarter when Penny Baroni (Dennis, MA) scored off a penalty corner, with the shot deflecting off a WPI defender and into the cage. Lakin continued to battle in the cage, making five saves in the period, including three in succession on attempts by Ashley Braren (Westwood, MA).

Lakin made two more saves in the fourth quarter, turning aside Braren and Golden, as the Beavers maintained control to secure the shutout.

Babson finished with a 27-0 advantage in shots and a 17-0 edge in shots on goal, while earning 14 penalty corners to none for WPI. Lakin finished with 13 saves, reaching double figures in stops for the fourth this season and the 10th time in the junior's career.

Madison Tibbals (Gorham, ME) did not face a shot in recording the shutout for Babson.

WPI is off until next Saturday when the Engineers travel to Mount Holyoke for a noon NEWMAC matchup, while Babson heads to Cambridge Tuesday for a 6pm conference contest at MIT.
