Medford, MA --- The WPI men's track & field team posted a pair of event titles and plethora of postseason-qualifying performances on Saturday at the second day of the Tufts Cupid Challenge.
Gavin Fleck (Bend, OR) led the Engineers with a first-place finish in the pole vault, clearing 4.81 meters to claim the event title.
On the track, Alden Betterley (Bow, NH) delivered a standout performance in the 800 meters, clocking 1:58.36 to place third overall while securing a NED3 provisional qualifying mark. Daniel Narvaez (Wayland, MA) and Colin Britner (Hampton, CT) added depth with times of 2:01.81 and 2:01.02, respectively.
Jurjen Bouvier (Longmeadow, MA) paced WPI's 400-meter efforts with a time of 51.84, followed by Colin Squier (Douglas, MA) in 53.15 and Teddy Wagner (Winthrop, MA) in 54.06.
In the 60-meter hurdles, Aloiye Okhipo (Milford, MA) advanced through preliminaries before improving to 8.42 in the finals to place third and earn an automatic NED3 qualifying mark. Will Fairfax (Dartmouth, MA) added a NED3 provisional qualifying performance with a time of 8.69.
Distance performances were highlighted by Drew O'Reilly (Syracuse, NY), who recorded a 4:27.39 mile to achieve an postseason provisional qualifying mark. Giuseppe Villani (Shrewsbury, MA) and Trip Williams (Pelham, NH) followed in 4:35.94 and 4:38.41, respectively.
In the 3,000 meters, Jackson Sobelman (Redding, CT) registered a time of 8:54.90, while Matthew Meerdink (Ballston Spa, NY) clocked 8:58.21. Nathan Barry (Newburyport, MA), Henry Jacobsen (Bolton, MA), and Craig Salois (Hopkinton, MA) rounded out the Engineers' efforts following with times of 9:19.32, 9:30.67 and 9:38.22.
In the throws, Ethan Anderson (North Haven, CT) captured the shot put title with a winning toss of 14.61 meters, earning an automatic NED3 postseason stint. John Cummings (Dallas, PA) followed next for the Engineers with a throw of 14.22 meters as Michael Zuo (Worcester, MA) chucked a 13.27m mark. Rounding out the event were Logan Lavimodiere (Cranston, RI) at 11.87m, Ethan Ramirez (Burlington, CT) at 11.33m, Zachary Gates (Mattapoisett, MA) at 11.19m and Abdulrahman Muayad (Yarmouth, ME) recorded a 12.27m toss in the open event.
In the weight throw, Anderson continued to lead the way with a fourth-place overall effort logging a 16.61m toss and automatic postseason qualifying mark followed by Zuo at 14.84m and Cummings at 11.54m.
The Crimson and Gray turn to the indoor regular season finale next week at the Triangle Classic hosted by Springfield on Saturday morning with events slated for a 10:30am start.
