Cambridge, MA --- The WPI men's swimming and diving team continued its strong championship performance Saturday at the 2026 NEWMAC Swimming and Diving Championships at MIT's Zesiger Center Pool.
WPI remains in third place with 524.50 total points. MIT leads the field with 1,066.50 points, followed by Coast Guard with 670. Babson sits fourth with 506, Wheaton fifth with 419, Springfield sixth with 329, and Clark seventh with 169.
The Engineers opened the evening with an impressive showing in the 400-yard IM, placing six swimmers in the finals. Freshman
Lucas Brown (Viera, FL) led the way with a fifth-place finish in 4:07.60, dropping more than a second from prelims. Freshman
Deion Chung (Honolulu, HI) followed in seventh at 4:10.37, shaving nearly two seconds off his morning time. Sophomore
Keegan Rowe (Harpswell, ME) placed 10th in 4:16.26, junior
Brian Hall (Westford, MA) finished 14th in 4:17.98, sophomore
Daniel Cory (Reading, MA) was 15th in 4:20.07, and senior
Samuel Witscher (Portland, OR) rounded out the group in 16th at 4:22.17, dropping nearly three seconds from prelims.
In the 100-yard butterfly, senior
Christopher Smith (Northbridge, MA) and junior
Dean Doubek (Arnold, MD) both scored in the championship final, finishing seventh and eighth, respectively. Smith touched in 49.74, improving more than half a second from the morning session, while Doubek followed closely in 49.85. Junior
Sean Tesoro (Reading, MA) added a 13th-place finish in 51.64.
The 200-yard freestyle saw junior
Nolan Schlessman (Sudbury, MA) lead WPI with a seventh-place finish in 1:41.44. Senior
Gavin McCullough (Colorado Springs, CO) placed 15th in 1:42.83, trimming more than half a second from prelims, and freshman
Kuba Latawiec (Newington, CT) finished 18th in 1:44.98.
In the 100-yard breaststroke, freshman
Luke Vipond (Mahtomedi, MN) placed 12th in 56.96 after dropping more than half a second from the morning session. Sophomore
Tyson Elliott (Portland, OR) finished 15th in 58.05, and freshman
Kyle Sundberg (East Northport, NY) took 20th in 59.29.
WPI closed out the individual swimming events with the 100-yard backstroke, where sophomore
Angad Ahluwalia (Attleboro, MA) finished 14th in 52.67. Junior
Lucas Pralle (Wayland, MA) placed 18th in 53.29, cutting half a second from his prelim time.
On the diving board, sophomore
Thomas Fitzgerald (East Longmeadow, MA) picked up major points for the Engineers, finishing third in the 1-meter event with a score of 437.25.
The event concludes on Sunday with the 1650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, and 400 freestyle relay. Due to inclement weather, the schedule has been condensed with finals contested during the morning session.
