Medford, MA --- The WPI men's indoor track and field team turned in a standout performance on Saturday at the Tufts 6-Way Invitational, highlighted by a program-record performance from senior
Gavin Fleck (Bend, OR) and 14 total top-three finishes.
Â
Fleck delivered the performance of the day in the pole vault, clearing 5.07 meters (16-7.5) to win the event. The mark broke his own indoor school record and bettered his outdoor best by one centimeter, setting a new overall program record. Fleck's clearance currently ranks fourth in NCAA Division III.
Â
WPI picked up additional top-three finishes on the track, led by seniors
Alden Betterley (Bow, NH) and
Jackson Sobelman (Redding, CT), who placed second and third, respectively, in the mile. Both Betterley and Sobelman recorded personal-best performances, with Betterley clocking a time of 4:22.75 and Sobelman following at 4:23.57.
Â
WPI also picked up a podium finish in the middle distances, as senior
Brinson Wyche (Corvallis, MT) placed second in the 1000 meters with a time of 2:31.41. Sophomore
Colin Britner (Hampton, CT) added a sixth-place finish in the event, while freshman
Matthew Meerdink (Ballston Spa, NY) finished 10th in the mile.
Â
Senior
Everett Mosher (Chester, VT) continued his strong season in the distance events, finishing second in the 3000 meters with a time of 8:18.96. Competing in the event for the first time, Mosher narrowly missed the school record by just two-tenths of a second, and his performance, including the flat-to-banked track conversion, places him inside the NCAA Division III top 20.
Â
In the middle distances, senior
Thomas Skerry (Dedham, MA) recorded a fifth-place finish in the 600 meters, crossing the line in 1:22.89. The performance met the New England Division III Championship automatic qualifying standard.
Â
The Engineers also saw success in the sprints, paced by senior
Alex Cole (Weymouth, MA), who placed second in the 60 meters with a time of 6.92 after qualifying second in the prelims. Cole was joined in the final by sophomore
Justin Serrecchia (Lakeville, MA), who finished sixth, and junior
Ajay Bellamy (Hamden, CT), who placed seventh.
Â
In the hurdles, sophomore
Will Fairfax (Dartmouth, MA) led WPI with a third-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 8.62. Freshman
Brian Stampoulos (Hillsboro, NJ) added a sixth-place showing, while both athletes advanced out of the prelims earlier in the day.
Â
WPI posted several strong efforts in the field events, highlighted by senior
Brett Gerlach (Lock Haven, PA), who finished second in the high jump with a clearance of 1.97 meters (6-5.5). In the throws, sophomore
John Cummings (Dallas, PA) placed second in the shot put, junior
