Zawacki's Jack Lifts Baseball to 3-2 Victory over Fitchburg State

Northboro, MA --- A solo shot from Jack Zawacki (Pittsford, NY) in the bottom of the eighth inning gave the WPI baseball team a 3-2 victory over visiting Fitchburg State on Friday at the New England Baseball Complex. The win lifts the Engineers to 9-2 overall, while the Falcons dip to 2-10.

Zawacki's blast capped a 4-for-4 day for the senior, who also added a stolen base. Liam Keblin (Newton, MA) finished with three hits, including a homer, while Zachary Roethlein (Pomfret Center, CT) had a pair of hits and a walk. Jonathan Lattimer (Windsor, CT) added a double and an RBI, while Matt Shea (Salem, NH) also had a double.

Kaiden Williams (North Aurora, IL) picked up the win in relief, going two innings, allowing one hit and an earned run. Jacob Wiberg (Exeter, NH) got the start, throwing four innings of scoreless baseball, while Mason Walls (Pearland, TX) earned the save, tossing an inning, with two strikeouts.

For Fitchburg State, Shane Daly (Rockland, MA) was saddled with the loss, pitching one inning and allowing two hits, including the Zawacki homer. The Falcons' offense was paced by Maxwell Riordan (Pepperell, MA) who drove in the only two runs for the visitors, on two hits, while Joseph Abt (Newbury, MA) also had a pair of hits.

WPI struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Shea worked a walk to start the frame, but a strikeout and a fly-out had him still at first with two down. However, Lattimer doubled to left to drive home Shea, making it 1-0 Engineers.

Fitchburg countered in the top of the first, tying the game on a Riordan single to right. Jason Kelly (East Bridgewater, MA) started the rally after he was hit by a pitch, before an Abt single pushed him into scoring position.

Keblin broke the tie in the bottom of the seventh, sending a 3-2 pitch over the fence to make it 2-1 WPI. Again the Falcons answered, as Riordan struck again, launching a blast that tied the game with two outs in the top of the eighth.

Zawacki's eventual game winner came in the bottom of the eighth, with his solo shot leading off the inning to make it 3-2 WPI.

In the top of the ninth, Williams got the first two outs before a triple from Ruairi Rago (Port Jefferson, NY) had Fitchburg threatening. Casey Bellew (Beverly, MA) worked a walk to put two on with two outs, before Walls got a called strike three to end the game.

WPI is back in action tomorrow with a doubleheader at Johnson & Wales beginning at 1:00pm. Fitchburg State is off until Tuesday, when they open conference play with Westfield State at home at 3:00pm.
