Pratt Powers Baseball Past New England College, 20-10, in High Scoring Non-Conference Affair

Northboro, MA --- Behind a five-RBI performance from Miles Pratt (Hampton, NH) and four runs scored by Chuck Cappello (Southboro, MA), WPI exploded for 20 runs on 15 hits Monday afternoon in a 20-10 victory over New England College at the New England Baseball Complex

WPI improves to 11-15 overall, while New England College falls to 8-22.

The Engineers jumped on the board immediately in the first inning as Jack Zawacki (Pittsford, NY) launched a two-run homer to left-center after Cappello doubled to begin the frame. Later in the inning, Jonathan Lattimer (Windsor, CT) drove in Zachary Roethlein (Pomfret Center, CT) with a groundout to make it 3-0.

WPI added three more runs in the second as Lattimer produced an RBI fielder's choice before Cappello scored on a balk and Jacob Wiberg (Exeter, NH) reached on an error that brought home another run. The Engineers then pushed the advantage to 8-0 in the third as Miles Pratt (Hampton, NH) scored on a throwing error before Spencer Merrick (Abington, MA) came home later in the inning on a Liam Keblin (Newton, MA) single.

New England College answered with six runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by RBI singles from David Spigel (Portsmouth, RI), TJ Hicks (Tampa, FL) and Brady Philibotte (Weare, NH), along with a two-run single from Chase O'Brien (Nashua, NH). The Pilgrims added four more runs in the fifth, including a two-run single by Spigel and an RBI hit from Mike Monteforte (Wilmington, MA), trimming the deficit to 11-10.

The Engineers responded immediately in the bottom of the fifth. Lattimer singled home a run before Pratt broke the game open with a grand slam to left field, extending the lead to 16-10. WPI tacked on another run in the sixth when Wiberg drove in Cappello on a fielder's choice before Cappello ended the game's scoring with a three-run homer in the seventh to evoke the 10-run rule.

Pratt paced the offense by going 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, five RBI and three runs scored. Cappello finished 3-for-5 with a double, a home run, three RBI and four runs scored, while Lattimer drove in three runs and scored three times. Zawacki added two hits and two RBI, while Roethlein scored three runs.

For New England College, Spigel went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Philibotte and Monteforte each added two hits.

On the mound, Daniel Lynn (Severna Park, MD) earned his first collegiate victory with two scoreless innings of relief, allowing no hits while striking out one. Dominic Monico (Litchfield, NH) started and struck out three over three innings, while Robert Runge (Manasquan, NJ), Joseph Conti (Lincoln, RI) and Damon Chase (Rye, NH) also saw action.

For the Pilgrims, Benoit Beaudoin (Meredith, NH) took the loss after allowing 11 runs, four earned, over four innings. Dillan Abbate (Port Jervis, NY) followed with 2.1 innings of relief.
