Keblin Delivers a Pair of Hits as Baseball Vanquished by Coast Guard in NEWMAC Affair

New London, CT --- Liam Keblin (Newton, MA) collected a pair of hits and Miles Pratt (Hampton, NH) scored WPI's lone run as the Engineers were defeated by Coast Guard 11-1 in a NEWMAC matchup Tuesday afternoon at Nitchman Field.

WPI moves to 15-19 overall and 3-11 in NEWMAC play, while the Bears improve to 14-17 and 7-9 in conference action.

Keblin finished 2-for-2 with a walk, while Pratt and Matt Shea (Pembroke, MA) each added a hit. Luke Blandino (Somers, CT), started for the Crimson and Gray while Ethan Smith (Hanson, MA), Daniel Lynn (Milford, CT), Joseph Conti (Wilmington, MA), Robert Runge (Manasquan, NJ) and Damon Chase (Sterling, MA) all saw time on the bump for WPI.

Nate Stafford (Jupiter, FL) paced Coast Guard, going 3-for-3 with a home run and five RBI, while Carson Cho (Haymarket, VA) scored twice and drove in two runs. On the mound, Alexander Smith (Fairfield, OH) earned the win, allowing one unearned run over 4.2 innings.

Coast Guard struck first on Stafford's solo homer in the opening inning and doubled the lead in the second on Cho's RBI single.

After Smith tossed a scoreless third for WPI, the Bears broke it open with three runs in the fourth. Stafford lined a two-run single to right before Max Van Auken (Franklinville, NJ) added an RBI single for a 5-0 advantage.

WPI answered in the fifth. Shea singled, Pratt followed with a hit, and Keblin's single set the table before Chuck Cappello (Southboro, MA) reached on an error that plated Pratt to make it 5-1.

Coast Guard responded immediately with two runs in the bottom of the inning, one scoring on a passed ball and another on Cho's sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 7-1.

The Bears added an RBI single from Drew Basque (Kealakekua, HI) in the sixth, then put the game away with three runs in the seventh, highlighted by Stafford's two-run single and an RBI hit from Mason Phillips (Oak Park, IL).

Both teams are back in action Wednesday for 3:30pm non-conference matchups. WPI heads to Tufts while Coast Guard remains home to host Hartford.
