Late Rally Stalls as Baseball Drops 10-4 Thursday Decision at UMass Dartmouth

North Dartmouth, MA --- The WPI baseball team fell behind 7-0 and couldn't complete a late rally, as the Engineers dropped a non-conference matchup at UMass Dartmouth, 10-4, on Thursday afternoon. The loss dips WPI to 10-13 on the season, while the Corsairs improve to 13-14.

Zachary Roethlein (Pomfret Center, CT) led the Engineers with two hits and an RBI, while Miles Pratt (Hampton, NH) added a hit and an RBI in the late innings. Greyson Baldizar (Seekonk, MA) drove in a run, and Ben Seidler (Yardley, PA) recorded a hit and scored a run.

Ethan Smith (Hanson, MA) took the loss, allowing nine runs, two earned, on five hits over five innings. Sean Murphy (East Taunton, MA) provided solid relief, tossing three innings while allowing just one run and striking out two.

UMass Dartmouth was paced by Chance Checca (Ballston Spa, NY), who went 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBI. Carlos Reyes (Hamden, CT) added a two-run double, while Austin Pagliettini (Crompond, NY) drove in two runs. Jackson Hayes (Westfield, MA) earned the win, tossing seven scoreless innings while allowing three hits.

The Corsairs broke the game open in the first inning, scoring six runs on a series of RBI hits and WPI miscues, with all six runs coming unearned. Checca opened the scoring with an RBI single before Pagliettini and Reyes each delivered two-run hits to extend the lead.

UMass Dartmouth added another run in the second on Checca's solo home run to make it 7-0.

The Corsairs pushed the lead to 9-0 in the fourth on an RBI single from Checca and a run-scoring error.

WPI broke through in the eighth inning, as Pratt delivered an RBI single before Baldizar grounded out to bring home another run. After UMass Dartmouth added a run in the bottom half, the Engineers plated two more in the ninth on an RBI groundout by Trice Cote (Milford, NH) and an RBI single from Roethlein to cap the scoring.
