Papamechail Scores Twice as Field Hockey Takes Down Wheaton in OT

Sophie Papamechail
WORCESTER -- Sophie Papamechail (Danvers, MA) scored twice, including the game-winning goal 3:42 into overtime, as WPI rallied from an early deficit to defeat visiting Wheaton, 2-1, Tuesday evening at H. Carr Field. The two goals were Papamechail's first of the season and the fifth and sixth of her career.

The Engineers improve to 5-5 overall and remain perfect at 3-0 in NEWMAC play with their second consecutive overtime victory, while the Lyons slip to 4-5 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

WPI controlled the early action, earning four penalty corners and putting three shots toward the Wheaton cage in the opening quarter. Grace Ferguson made a save on Madeline Chase (Danvers, MA) at 3:09, while Ella Reeners (Windham, NH) put a pair of shots wide as the Engineers applied pressure throughout the period.

The Lyons broke through 5:37 into the second quarter when Kayla Wilonski (Wallingford, CT) finished off a feed from Sadie Tranter (Simsbury, CT) at 20:37. WPI answered just 50 seconds later as Papamechail converted a pass from Violet Westburg (Falmouth, ME) at 21:27 to even the contest. Myles Lakin (Reading, MA) then kept the game tied with a pair of saves on Wilonski later in the quarter.

The Engineers generated their best offensive pressure of regulation in the third quarter, earning six penalty corners and putting three shots toward the Wheaton cage. Ava Cortis (Medway, MA) had a shot saved by Ferguson at 44:24, while Chase had another attempt blocked as WPI continued to threaten.

Wheaton turned up the pressure in the fourth quarter, earning eight penalty corners and putting five shots toward the WPI cage. Lakin made saves on Ally Slicer (Waterford, ME) and Wilonski, while another Wilonski attempt was blocked as the Engineers held the Lyons scoreless and forced overtime.

Wilonski nearly ended the game 18 seconds into overtime when her shot hit the post, but WPI quickly regained possession and earned three penalty corners before Papamechail delivered the decisive strike at 63:42. Papamechail intercepted a pass, raced past two defenders and the goalkeeper, and tucked the ball into the cage for her second goal of the night and the OT winner.

Wheaton held a 12-9 advantage in shots, but the two teams each put five on target, while WPI held a 13-11 edge in penalty corners.  Lakin finished with four saves, while Ferguson made three stops for the Lyons. Wilonski led all players with eight shots and four shots on goal, while Papamechail recorded two shots and two goals for the Engineers.

Both squads return to NEWMAC action Saturday with home contests. WPI squares off with No. 5 Babson at 4:30pm, while Wheaton welcomes Mount Holyoke for the Battle of the Lyons at noon.
