Bridgewater, MA --- In college men's basketball action, senior
guard Ryan Cain (Webster, MA) poured in a
season-high 28 points to lead the visiting Engineers of WPI to a
75-61 non-conference win over Bridgewater State College this
evening at the Tinsley Center in Bridgewater.
With the win, the Engineers remain undefeated on the young season
as they are now a perfect 3-0. BSC suffers its first loss of the
year as the Bears fall to 2-1.
Cain, who entered the game having connected on just 1 of 11
three-point attempts in WPI's first two games, drainer 4 of 7 from
beyond the arc and was also 8-for-11 at the free throw line.
Bridgewater State senior guard Adam Rose (Harwich,
MA) played very well for the Bears as he scored a season-high 24
points on 9 of 14 shooting. Rose in fact scored BSC's first 9
points of the game.
The game was close throughout most of the first half before the
Engineers went on a 10-0 run to take a 31-20 lead with 5:17
remaining in the opening stanza. Junior forward Antoine
Coleman (Everett, MA) buried a three-pointer and Cain hit
three free throws and a basket during the run. Coleman finished
with 17 points on 8-for-11 shooting and also added 8 rebounds and 3
steals. WPI would maintain the double-digit advantage for the
remainder of the half as the Engineers took a 40-29 lead into the
locker-room.
WPI took the momentum into the second half and built their largest
lead of the game, 54-37, with 12:15 to go. Bridgewater pulled to
within nine points late in the half but that would be as close as
they would get.
Cain had 13 of his 28 points in the second stanza while Coleman
added 10 points in the half on 5 of 7 shooting. Sophomore guard
Jerome Kirkland (Boston, MA) finished with 17
points for the game as he also had 10 points in the second
half.
Bridgewater struggled mightily at the free throw line for the third
straight game as the Bears connected on just 10 of 21 foul shots
(48%). Bridgewater is in fact shooting just 56% (38-for-68) from
the charity stripe through their first three games. The Bears
turned the ball over 28 times and also lost the battle on the
boards as they were outrebounded by a margin of 39 to 28.
Sophomore forward Roland Millien (Stoughton, MA)
also played well for the Bears as he pulled down a game-high 10
rebounds to go along with 8 points and 3 assists.
Bridgewater State will return to the hardwood on Tuesday, November
28th as the Bears host the Corsairs of UMass-Dartmouth at 8
o'clock. WPI will travel to Salem State on Sunday at 4pm when they
the Vikings.
