Worcester, MA --- Heather Hassett (Oxford, MA)
notched a pair of first half goals to help WPI defeat visiting
Bridgewater State 3-1 in non-conference field hockey action
Thursday evening. The Engineers remain unbeaten in five contests
this season (5-0) while the Bears fall to 1-2.
Hassett's markers were just over three minutes apart midway
through the first stanza on assists from Kelly
Johnson (Buxton, ME) and Maggie Elbag
(Rutland, MA) respectively.
Bridgewater State cut the deficit in half midway through the
second half when Ashley Nardone (West Yarmouth,
MA) scored from an assist from Angela Frost
(Marlboro, MA) following a scramble off a penalty corner. The
Engineers responded minutes later when Johnson potted her team-best
fifth goal on a helper from Jenelle Pope
(Sterling, MA) after a penalty corner of their own.
Betsy Ray (Simsbury, CT) registered a save
while earning the victory to pick up her first collegiate win.
Nicole Downs (Hanover, MA) collected seven saves
in between the pipes for BSC while Robin Serino
(Forestdale, MA) was credited with a defensive save.
WPI will return to action on Saturday when they make the trip to
Schenectady, NY to face Union in a game slated to start at 2pm.
Bridgewater State also plays on Saturday as they travel to Danbury,
CT to meet Western Connecticut is a Little East Conference match-up
scheduled for 6pm.
